The Banner

I just wanted to say that for some reason or another I had not visited nuxified.com. Isn't that silly? Anyway, I went there tonight. I just wanted to say that I like the banner at nuxified.com a bit more than I like nuxified.org. But that's just me. Others may have their own opinion. (The reason I care is because I'm investigating how to make a stellar banner for my killer web app I'm working on now. So banners are on my mind right now. I'm using Inkscape to conceptualize it before I convert it all to CSS and HTML.)

However, you weren't asking me for my opinion on this, so I do not want to come off as being rude.

Laughing Really? Laughing out loud

Well, there's a possibility of slighty redisinging Nuxified.com, including the header, so ideas on what would be better are welcome.

The big Tux foot became kind of a symbol of nuxified.com (at least in my mind), but if people think something else would represent it better I think it's not too late to change.

So, feel free to make propositions or suggestions if you'd like. If someone has time and will to make one, feel free to send (or link us to) those too and then we can consider them (we = the community here).

New header

Alright, instead of starting another thread I'll just continue on this one as it is pretty much related. The above was commenting on the Nuxified.com header, which is actually what we now have here. However, the current header in its current state doesn't exactly fit. The words "Tell us your story" doesn't exactly imply what this site is, a free software support community site.

So I'd like to call for any ideas you may have, any suggestions, proposals, even sketches and draft designs that you may have or want to make to submit as possible header on Nuxified.org.

Even though we have so far had this big Tux foot as kind of a symbol here where getting "nuxified" playfully speaking meant getting hit in the face by a big Tuxes foot, this is the time where we may change this to something most of us may think is better, or decide to stick with that.

In either case a new header is needed and what I would like it to be, at least personally, is to contain major mascots that represent the world of Free Software. That would be the GNU and the linux mascot Tux and maybe the BSD mascot beasty. What I have in mind is them standing in some way next to each other looking friendly.. kind of symbolizing a friendly community that spans more than just one operating system user base (like GNU/Linux), but others too.

That is just one among many possible ideas though. Maybe we can just simplify the whole thing and make a cool universal logo that in some way can represent the same thing as above, but without including a crowd of mascots. Laughing out loud

Anyway, as soon as I have something to show I'll post it here. If I will have a new header I might put it upthere and you can then see if you like or not or if you want to change something.

Here's a little something I made so far that might be usable in a header/logo:

Gnu with a Tux's beak - my sisters idea. That is just to show the basic idea. It should probably be redesigned if we ever decide to use it. It is based off existing images.

Little gnu - this is probably best thing I made in inkscape so far, though it could still use some improvements. I've tried to aproximate the gnu from this image. The problem with that image is that it is nontransparent png and there is no svg source to play with, so it's pretty hard to integrate into logos and headers. So I made this in inkscape which can be modified and incorporated easily anywhere. Get the source here. I hereby release it to public domain, though a mention of where you got it would be appreciated in case you use it as is and someone asks who made it. Eye

Maybe that gives you some ideas.. Smiling

Cheers

First crazy idea that comes

First crazy idea that comes to mind: Tux and Beastie (that's what the BSD thing is called, right?) and GNU-Gnu pulling a sheep from a pond. I don't know if the users want to be represented as wet sheep, though...

When in doubt, follow your heart (and notice that penguins are really cute).

Who would sheep represent

Who would sheep represent there, though? Users? Oh.. no. Smiling

I'll make up a header of some kind today and put it up.. seems like that's gonna be the best way to decide considering now many ideas are coming in. You either like it or not. If not, I'll make another one. Eye

Thanks Andrew, have you

Thanks Andrew, have you voted on it here?

Not everyone likes it.. so much that I've started thinking of a new header with the old Tux and its foot and some other mascots, but the lack of proper sources for beasty and the GNU make it hard to make it look right while keeping only Tux might make us a bit too "linux centered"..

Personally I do like the current header very much, but I made it so... my bias.

Try making the gradient

Try making the gradient lightskyblue->skyblue instead of black->darkblue, I think that will look more friendly. Also, get rid of the monitor, and increase the size of the moon. If we don't want to seem linux-centered, we can't keep the tux foot :/

Less is more.

I made a new header. It uses the Tux and its foot afterall.. I am already getting pretty tired of the whole thing (you may have noticed), trying to make a logo that perfectly fits to represent all Free Operating Systems, but it's hard when you have such a limited choice of good quality and nice looking suitable GNU and Beastie logos.. You've got plenty of Tux around as it is the most famous anyway and it looks good in almost all cases. I tried. Oh I did try various combinations, but it all either turns out too crowdy, lower quality or just plain doesn't fit right. It is just the header, and in the header it is pretty visible that we are about all free OS's, thus that OS's menu that I've put there. So why not just embrace the Tux with a big foot as our mascot.. I don't think a mere mascot would in any way hurt anyone's philosophy. I doubt, for example, that even RMS would go that far to say something like "though shalt use GNU logo whenever you talk about GNU/Linux" in addition to insisting to call it that way. In a header we do acknowledge its name by saying "GNU/Linux" so there.. even he ought to be happy.

If it looks best, hurts noone and most people liked it from the beginning then maybe the good old tux with a big foot is the way to go.

I didn't get rid of the monitor though. In the old Nuxified.org header there was a speech bubble coming out of the Tuxes beak saying "Got NUX?". Well, instead of a bubble I put it as if he typed that on a computer screen which I think should nicely fit the site since we are a *computer* software support forums and that screen looks modern and nice. IMO it's a nice touch I hope. Smiling

Notice that the Tux is also holding a keyboard in his hand (it's a tango keyboard icon), you guessed, he used it to type that "Got Nux?" text on that screen. Eye

So I hope everyone likes this one better. I hope I've struck the balance.

Cheers!

Daniel

advertising in banner?

There used to be a thinkgeek ad on nuxified.org. I wonder if it will still fit in the new banner? I don't mean "look good", I mean does it actually fit? If not, what other space has been reserved for ads?

As for the banner, my estimate of that space between the menu (on the right) and the top is that it would fit. I think it will.

But that ThinkGeek ad wasn't working out all that great anyway. I'm focusing more on building the site up and then there may be more success with advertising. So for now it can even stay advertising-clean. Smiling

Most success I had was with text link advertising. It doesn't look intrusive, but actually pays since I'm selling it manually, and it is a little easier to find spots for only text links. Smiling
