Anybody Know How To Get A D-Link DWL-G630 Working?

Hi, I'm new to the forum and Ubuntu.

Read a lot on the web about installing my wireless card.

Works fine on the Win2000 side of the dual boot on my Dell Latitude.

Got driver from windows install disk for the Ubuntu side.

Installed it with ndiswrapper -i net5211.inf.

ndiswrapper -l says Installed ndis drivers: net5211 driver & hardware present.

ndiswrapper -m says modprobe config already contains alias directive.

System > Admin > Networking says wireless connection interface wlan0 is active.

Network Connection (upper right toolbar) says lo is sending and receiving.

Network Connection does not have wlan0 as a possibility but had eth0 when the wired card was installed. Changed the name to wlan0 but that didn't have any effect. Signal strength is 0%

iwconfig says wlan0 Access Point: Not-Associated, lo/sit0 no wireless xtensions.

ifconfig says lo sending & receiving, wlan0 RX/TX both 0

ifup wlan0 says interface wlan0 already configured.

iwconfig wlan0 up seems to work (no errors) but ping access point says connect: Network is unreachable.

Ping access point was working with static IP but stopped. dhcp never worked.

Reinstalled Ubuntu to get back to virgin install but ping AP still not working.

lspci gives Eth controller: Atheros communications: Unknown device 001a (rev 01).

Edited /etc/pcmcia/config and under Wireless Network Adapters changed DWL-650 to DWL-G630, version D to C, and bind "orinoco_cs" to bind "atheros_cs". Wrong?

Did an ifdown wlan0 and got Listening on LPF/wlan0/00:13:46:12:etc (MAC addr?), Sending on LPF/wlan0/00:13:46:12:d3:etc (same), Sending on Socket/fallback

ifup wlan0 gives same info as ifdown wlan0 but in addition does DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 intervals 5,14,7,10,17,8, then says No DHCPOFFERS received, No working leases in persistent database - sleeping. mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //host1/e, missing code page or other error.

iwlist wlan0 scan lists 20 wireless signals in my area (correct interpretation?)

route shows empty route table

iwconfig wlan0 essid DWL-G630 mode auto seems to work but AP still not-assoc.

route add default gateway 192.168.1.1 gives error SIOADDRT: Network unreachable.

dmesg says
lo: Disabled Privacy Extensions,
IPv6 over IPv4 tunneling driver,
wlan0: no IPv6 routers present (router firmware was recently updated),
ndiswrapper using irq 11,
wlan0: vendor: '',
wlan0: ndiswrapper (IoCreateUnprotectedSymbolicLink:744) --UNIMPLEMENTED--,
wlan0: ndiswrapper ethernet device 00:13:46:12:etc using driver net5211, 168C:001A:1186:3B08.5.conf
wlan0: encryption modes supported: WEP; TKIP with WPA; AES/CCMP with WPA

What am I doing wrong? Is there a config file (or many) that I don't know about that needs to be modified to get this to work? Any help would be appreciated. As you can see, I have no idea what I'm doing. Thanks.

I'm have never used wireless

I'm have never used wireless with GNU/Linux so I'm not very sure of what you should do. Though I would have thought you should be able to have wireless without using the Win drivers via ndiswrapper.

From here it seems you sholud follow this guide.

Hope this is of some use.
