Last week saw the release of FFmpeg 4.0 – it’s been 7 months after a major 3.4 release.
Most useful improvements, I think, are the following:
- H.264, HEVC, MJPEG, MPEG-1/2/4, VC1, VP8/9 decoders – all using hardware acceleration NVIDIA NVDEC
- AV1 codec is now suppoted using libaom
- AMD AMF powered encoders for H.264 and HEVC
- native aptX and aptX HD encoder and decoder
Go check the rest of the changelog on the FFmpeg News page, it’s an impressive list!
