Zenwalk is a lightweight desktop oriented Slackware based GNU/Linux distribution that aims to be fast and user friendly. It is still quite new, but the growth, as well as the progress of development, has been pretty fast so far. I've taken a hike with the latest release, Zenwalk 4.0, and here's what I can say about it.

BLAG - An Easy Way to Freedom?

Introduction

BLAG Linux with GNU is a small one CD distribution of the GNU/Linux operating system based upon Fedora Core. The version I'm taking a look at here, BLAG-500000, is based upon Fedora Core 5, with a bunch of packages added from third party sources.

BLAG aims to create a one CD distribution with everything people need for the desktop environment. It also aims to be a 100% Free Software distribution and has been recognized by as doing this on the GNU website, along with only six other distributions of GNU/Linux (http://www.gnu.org/links/links.html#FreeGNULinuxDistributions).

So I thought I'd see if this distribution has what it takes to bring freedom to the desktop, without being a pain to install and use.

React OS: Windows done right

Guess what does the following screenshot show?

No it is not Windows. It does look and feel like Windows, but this baby is Free Software, an operating system called React OS.

Why does it look like Windows? Because React OS is a project of developing a Microsoft Windows compatible operating system. It is supposed to run programs and even drivers meant for Windows and it is supposed to look like Windows so that former Windows users can ease right into it without feeling that scary feeling: the difference.

Experiencing Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 (step by step with screenshots)

The release of Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 caused a lot of buzz even before it happened. The actual release was originally planned for April 2006 and if it wasn't postponed for June 1st it would have been called 6.04 according to its version naming scheme (6 for the current year and 04 for month). Mark Shuttleworth's request for postponing, the consequential decision making process (which was open), but also some friction regarding the kubuntu project management only contributed to the already quite high awareness, or "buzz", around this popular GNU/Linux distribution.
