gNewSense 1.0 released, gains FSF sponsorship
gNewSense is a 100% Free Software version of Ubuntu. It is currently based on Dapper. I have tried it recently and it pretty much has the polished feel of Ubuntu, but with confidence that there is no proprietary software and components involved anywhere. According to the FSF's press release it is now backed by FSF which pretty much ensures that it will live a long life and possibly progress pretty fast.
The news caught me in the middle of my current distro shuffle. Now I'm compelled to download 1.0 and try it, possibly even contribute in some way. Even if I don't end up running it as my primary distro (at this point I'm considering Frugalware), it might be something to have on an alternative partition set. I'm not really sure yet..
In any case this project really deserves all attention it can get. It is based on the most succesful and probably most polished GNU/Linux flavor around, and is yet 100% Free Software. That puts it high up with other such players like BLAG (possibly Fedora Core too) and Ututo.
Gotta congratulate them!
