The four pin connection

The four pin connection should be the input from your optical drive. Did you check to see if the alsa service is running on boot?

Sound should be coming from

Sound should be coming from the motherboard (or sound card) to the speakers via a connector that looks like this.

I don't know what the 4 pin port is for , but this is pretty much the standard way it goes..

Open the mixer app, un-mute

Open the mixer app, un-mute all channels, and try playing some sound again.

If that didn't help, googling your mainboard told me you need a driver for the Realtek ALC660, or for some reason that driver (which I expect is included with your linux distribution just like all the other drivers) doesn't work correctly. In that case, I forward this question to someone who is more experienced in troubleshooting linux audio (for me it always just worked). They will probably want to know the output of the following commands in the terminal:

lsmod
lspci -v
aplay -l

Usually all drivers will

Usually all drivers will already be included with your linux distribution. Is there any component or feature that doesn't work?
