You might be referring to

You might be referring to some GLX stuff, which they say here was removed. But since making it 100% Free Software is the core goal of the gNewSense project I'd bet everything in this release is 100% Free.

Of course, in case anyone finds something that isn't, a bug report can be filed here.

I'll probably try it out as well one of these days.

Cheers

great, I really want to check that out,
I read somewhere that there was some non-free OpenGL/Mesa related stuff and they were removed, any info about that?
the BLAG distro has also started a linux-libre version of the kernel which is a good thing for the goal of Freedomware.
I will try to clean up some space and install gNewSense on my desktop.

Well, not everything is

Well, not everything is ready. But the parts that are not ready have been ported from KDE 3.5 so that still everything is available in 4.0.
Everything is supposed to be completely done for 4.1, which, as far as I remember is scheduled for later this year, and I am sure that there will be an upgrade for Fedora, otherwise it'll surely be in Fedora 10 which will probably will be released in October of November.

Awesome, and quite bold I might add. It is stated that KDE 4.0.x is not really full featured and production ready. I suppose Fedora will attempt to fill in the blanks?

I might give it a go.

Yes, Fedora 9 will come

Yes, Fedora 9 will come with KDE 4. And as far as I can see from the Preview-Release (the current Rawhide-version) only KDE 4, no more KDE 3.

I'll give a report here how it goes, and I actually can't wait to have it on my box.

I am on Hardy right now.. not sure if I'll spare time to give Fedora a whirl, but the switch to KDE4 intrigues me. Kubuntu only has a preview edition more or less so it'd be interesting to see a distro actually switch wholesale to it, if that's what Fedora 9 will do?

Cheers

The good thing

What I like most of DesktopBSD is that you can try it first as a live DVD and if it all works for you then install it, if it doesn't then you have not wasted much time trying it out.

Interesting

I installed OpenBSD not long ago, but because I failed to properly route internet access to it, I decided to remove it and install something else called SourceMage GNU/Linux (SMGL). I'm still failing at routing. :< Something isn't working and it's either something in the hardware or my networking (it routes to my laptop fine, however)

I'll have to figure it out! Anyhow, DesktopBSD sounds really interesting. I'd love to take this for a spin someday.

This actually was one

This actually was one reason to think about that. Not only for Nuxified though, but for everybody who would like to build upon EasyLFS and add stuff to it that he wants to be installed right away.

I do hope that this will add some people to the "userbase" of EasyLFS (if one can actually speak of anything that even slightly resembles a userbase, but after all there have been quite some downloads of 0.4) and maybe even help some people spawn their own thing with this.

I still didn't get around doing this, but in my new job I have the really cool possibility to spend two hours a week on my own projects. It's not much, but it's still really cool to have this time.
So this might actually help to get this done, and also to get something written on how to do this.

This could be interesting. This could be the missing link between EasyLFS as such and a potential Nuxified distro we talked about that would be suitable for every day desktop users, if we have enough people still interested in that and there is an objective real use for it.

After making the mentioned changes everything works nicely.
By now every CD has been downloaded at least once, so now there are two seeders for each CD right now.
I have no idea who these people are, but I'm happy that they help sharing my files.

Okay, now it should be

Okay, now it should be fixed.
I have played around a bit and opened TCP/6881, TCP/1900 and UDP/1900 on my box.
TCP/6881 is used for BitTorrent, the other two are for UPNP. Now my router is found and the port is forwarded by the UPNP-plugin, without me having to do this statically on the router. That's a good thing, since sometimes my IP might change. Usually it's .100, but if I don't use it for a day or two this IP might be released and then assigned to the notebook if this comes first.
Sadly there doesn't seem to be a way in my router to assign an IP to a MAC statically.

I'll still try around if need to explicitly open TCP/6881, but that's something for tomorrow.

And thanks for helping to seed EasyLFS. It's really appreciated.

>> I'll try to get this

>> I'll try to get this done this weekend, including some text on how to write your own modules for EasyLFS.

No rush as far as I am concerned, but I *am* interested in contrasting packaging solutions. If this is a simple packaging solution, I might as well start here.

>> X isn't such a big deal. .. KDE

So I have heard. I picked on X because it is the "kernel" of contemporary GUI interfaces. I want speed but quality all around. I don't want bloat. If I cut too much here, it has repercussions for everything that lies on top of it possibly meaning I will fall short of the end goal/vision and then have to go far back and start recompiling. Ditto for the kernel (though in practice it may not be a big deal, just require some trial and error).

For managing builds and rebuilds I expect to use subversion judiciously on the build directories so that I can backtrack quicker to certain points and not find myself accidently ending up having to do a full recompile of most parts... of eg KDE! I want to find good build parameters, so expect to do numerous rebuilds.

And I am making a big deal of this in anticipation because I lack experience but know that there are potentially many combinations. Once I get started, maybe all will be smooth sailing, and I will wonder why I didn't start sooner. .. or not.

Hope (eg) blfs docs help out a lot.

I am now officially an easylfs seeder, btw

X isn't such a big deal. Yes, it's lots of packages which you need to compile in a certain order (not too strict, but some packages need some others to compile), but it doesn't have many external dependencies, unlike real monsters like KDE.

As said, building add-on modules for the EasyLFS is pretty easy. Currently I'm actually thinking about providing a module which is supposed to make building additional modules easier. This of course then would be standard in the next version.

I'll try to get this done this weekend, including some text on how to write your own modules for EasyLFS.
