* Now talking on #tuxproject * land0 has quit ("Leaving.") * land0 (n=land0@c-67-183-68-241.hsd1.wa.comcast.net) has joined #tuxproject Are you here for the meeting? I'm always here. :) nice autojoin :) nice So meeting is soon? in three minutes Oh, great! :) I've actually got something to invite people to. :) sweet go for it http://www.nuxified.org/article/nuxified_and_cluenet_prepare_a_gaming_tourney_you_are_invited Maybe I should write about it on tuxproject.com? That would be outstanding very cool Is helios coming here too? no :( I think we will be it tonight Oh well, he's a busy guy I suppose. Larry got called in to work Only two of us? :D that is ok One of the things I wanted to talk about is GetNix Alright. The thing that was interesting about your announcement on nuxified is that it was completely inline with the direction I wanted to see GetNix go in but I did not have the right words so to speak I really want GetNix to be an ads free starting point for people new to Free Software or as I call it Freedomware It should not matter what OS they are using I do not want it to be the final destination Indeed. That's great to hear.. GetNix is such an easy name to remember and it is very marketable in the sense that other companies promoting FOSS solutions can point people to it etc... It's going to aim at home desktop users, right? yes that and small businesses in that order so desktop user primarily small busness secondary I have been installing Linux as an alternative for several years Cool. I think one of the important things would be to differentiate from GetGNULinux.org and similar projects enough to be able to compliment them rather than compete with them. one of the things I have learned is that ther are some that need to use M$ and Appl$ they are locked in over one app or another but that should not stop them from adopting FOSS solutions Yes I copmpletely agree completely too :D Well as long as they move in the right direction. :) It is a start baby steps and all yeah About GLM (GNU/Linux Matters, organization behind GetGNULinux.org).. most people cannot believe it until they use it on a platform they are comfortable with They have been talking about launching a site that will be an introduction to freedom, probably not quite like getnix, but it's dancing around it :) I see a sec, trying to find some reference to it np Ah looks like their site is down, what timing. :S Anyway I think it's more general than getnix.. I really should contact them with more information about what GetNix and the Tux Project is about I have been so swamped finishing lol the Tux Project They have a forum at nuxified http://www.nuxified.org/forum/105 lol cause it will never be finished hehe great I will post about it in there thank you for that np I get so busy and there is so much I want to do :D But I can only do so much Yeah, I have the same "too many ideas, too little done" problem :) :) I am trying to make resources available for people to take their ideas forward it is a challenge without the Non Profit in place yet but we are moving forward on it Great Larry has really picked up the ball on it It is my understanding that GLM is in Europe is that true? Yep One french guy and one spanish. :) That is really awesome but based on french, legally *france I see I am not up to speed on NPO laws hence Larry taking the lead forgot to start the log Blue-gnu recently done an interview with them: http://blue-gnu.biz/content/gnu_linux_matters_freedom_key :( nice Oh I can log it, xchat didn't cut the start off yet :) sweet thx It is my understanding that the Tux Project can conduct non-profit business in any state within the US but to take donations outside the US gets tricky I suppose so.. I'm not from US. I could be wrong It would be great for the Tux Project to be able to work with GLM on the European front We could point those from your side of the pond to them :) indeed, although it's yet to be seen if the two projects would overlap for you to basically divide the globe between the two :) true I would love to be able to work together with them when we can when we can being "legally speaking" alas I am not the expert me neither ;) and not a big fan of legal mumbo jumbo :P not a fan if you ask me, if you've got something to collaborate on, don't ask if you may, just do it :) either what legal constrain should there be for that? :) I see wisdom to that it depends on how far it goes I suppose, yeah.. Well you can't make really "official" partnerships without some legal establishment, that's true :) exactly Once the paperwork is filed on this side I think the Tux Project will start to bloom I hope so. We will be able to crank up our install of Civi CRM that will help to mobilze us mobilize too ;) :) That's basically a custom packed drupal AFAIK? yes Hm actually, that's quite useful. we will be enabling it as a feature kind of an unusuall aproach but I think it will prove to be very useful It will enable us to empower various small projects to have fundraising tools available to them yeah I know some people have become discouraged at the rate of speed that we are getting things finalized but it will happen soon once we have the legal standing we will really be able to turn up the power We are going to be launching yet another website in time for "Linux Day!" so many websites so little time it will be a simple drupal based install that invites people to thank the Linux development team and Linus if they so choose for the Linux kernel maybe share your Linux story type of thing sites like nuxified getnix maybe other could snag a feed from it and place it ina block not that you would have to ;) just an after thought well wouldn't hurt :) I do not have high hopes for the 17th that reminds me.. nuxified.com used to be a "share your linux story" site :D later .com merged into .org :) really I did not know that I am taking it that it was not "succesful?" well, it was a bit more general, encouraging people to share their testimony on GNU/Linux and other Free Software, we had a few such articles, but it wasn't "hugely" succesful :) but the merge really had more to do with the fact that these testimonies were in fact turning out to be just reviews of certain distros and nuxified.org which we started later had too similar a theme to be kept separate from .com so naturally, we merged it :) initially, .org was just a forum, now it's forum + blogs, articles, screenshots :) I was hoping to get a few people together that could invite others to sign the "digital thank you site" well that's a lot more specific so I think it'll work I hope so it's different when you put it as a "thank you site" than when you say "share your experiences" :) my failure tends to be in that I keep things too general :) I was hoping it would be unique enough to gat some attention over something that even those on different sides of the FOSS fence could unite over gat/get I think it will.. and if it will, then we can do a "thank RMS" site too :P indeed :) Exactly! That would be in October I think Hehe I would have to double check we looked it up once let me see I can't find it seems simple enough question to find an answer to wikipedia doh! Yes October 4th FSF Day! :) October 4th I will post that to the Tux Project tomorrow Cool That will make it easier for people to remember too So on Getnix I was going to link to Nuxified as the place to go for freindly online support like I mentioned in my comment It will be on the front page in the main menu Great. :) Our greatest asset so far have been allies.. I was going to point it directly to the forum The thing is, hardly anyone can go up against big forums like LinuxForums.org and LinuxQuestions.org.. they don't even have to try anymore.. That'd be fine forums are really meant to be the center of it Is there a introductory page that could explain how it works? break it down in non geek terms http://www.nuxified.org/about and http://www.nuxified.org/frequently_asked_questions also the registration process is leading users step by step basically... I registered a while back so I did not get that I do not think that is very cool can I sign up a testing user to check it out? well it's nothing special really, you probably seen it.. basically the first step is just clicking on the "need help" link (though any link leading to the /user page would work, and after filling out the details you're landed at a page with a big button pointing directly to a "new topic" page :) ah the user can then immediately post even though they're not yet activated as full blown user, in order to be able to quickly ask the question he had in mind that is frickin cool all the while a notification block is up on the page reminding him that he should activate to become full user :) (which is done by clicking on the activation link in an email :) did you have to set that up? Or was it a feature. I used a logintobbogan module and set it to point to a specific page after login, I made that page manually.. about the non-authenticated user being able to post, it's just a matter of setting up permissions like that and also setting logintobbogan to put new users into that type of user (non-authenticated, but with basic enough permissions to post) nice well done thanks, it was a while ago actually :) http://www.nuxified.org/welcome (that's a page they see after registering :) Very cool That will help people new to forums alot I am almost wondering if I should point them to the login page immediate gratification :) Ok so I will be pointing to the FAQ page I think it makes the most sense the login is right on the left ok on the right lol I think I am getting tired So I will announce on Tux Project about FSF Day Alright. :) Are you going to announce the Gaming promo? I'll probably post about this gaming tourney yeah :D I already posted about it on Nexuiz, OpenArena and BZflag forums :) which are our star games :) Nice I will setup Linux Day thank you site and GetNix with the links in the main menu Thank you for that. :) then I might as well setup the FSF Day thank you site as well It's my pleasure. :) :) I will also get in contact witht he GLM folks via the Nuxified forum Anything else you can think of ? Hmm, well not right now, only rehashing what's said.. it'd really be good to get together more of us some time :) yes every Wed like helios, Larry etc.. yeah I will see if I can talk Ken into it oh and Olivier and Gustavo too would be too.. I'll invite them *would be good that would be great They're the GLM guys nice that would be perfect I am looking forward to getting to know them thanks for your time It is time for me to stumble into bed no problem been up since 4am oh heh, good night :) talk soon though I am sure yep :) could you email me the log from this meeting? oh right.. a sec
