memory

Replying to another thread I thought about asking this too, just to get a general picture of how much memory is *really* needed on an intensively used desktop system.

So.. do you ever actually spend more than 512MB of RAM in your system, even if you have 1GB? How much is your maximum and how often do you reach it?

I was wondering if there is a way to reduce the use of swap in GNU/Linux so that it doesn't put anything in swap as long as it still has real memory left. After searching I found out about "swappiness" setting for the Linux kernel.
