Hey,

I am, for some reason, going off linux atm, so does anyone know any other OS, that will fit on one or 2 cds, easy to set up, and will work on some old hardware, stuck in a rut here, help please...

The old 32 bit version of menuet OS, it fits on one floppy. GUI and everything.
http://www.menuetos.net/

That's probably not what you're looking for, though. What do you want to use the computer for? What is your reason for not using linux?

What about Minix, *BSD, QNX or Plan9?

QNX is a superb operating system, but proprietary. Please do not recommend it here.

I think your best bet should be one of the BSD's, but I think you already tried those. I'm not sure what others to recommend that weren't mentioned already, but I can refer you to a site where you can find out about many alternative free operating systems: http://www.freeos.com

Weren't you going to make your own GNU/Linux distro?

EDIT: I moved this topic to "other free operating systems" forum as I think it's more appropriate there than in the lounge.

Wasn't QNX free before? I remember that I downloaded some version of it around 2 or 3 years ago, from the official website. That's why I mentioned it. Anyway I didn't do anything with it, just put it on a CD in case someday I feel the need to try it.

Somehow strange nobody mentioned Hurd yet, what about that? I guess it's quite similar to Linux, but it's still something else. Anyway, as long as it's Unixish it'll be quite similar to Linux. Eye

Yeah, HURD is an option as well, but it's not for the faint of the hear I'd say. Smiling

But good point about anything unix-like being very similar to GNU/Linux. They probably wont even look any different since many of them use same window managers and desktop environments as GNU/Linux like KDE, GNOME, WindowMaker etc..

So if you want something that merely looks different, you can just change your WM.

But if it's about the underlieing system then there can be some significant changes to explore I suppose.

Good luck with your mission of exploration onlinebacon! (the word "explore" just rang a bell at me, reminds me of Star Trek! Laughing out loud )

QNX is free beer (and only for 30 days) but not free software, i.e., only 免費 but not 自由. Smiling

And I think he's already tried GNU.

Some parts of the QNX Momentics suite stop working after the 30 day trial, but you don't need those anyway unless you're into developing embedded devices. The OS itself is free beer forever for noncommercial use.

Anyway, proprietary and noncommercial use only, I don't think you want to use that OS ;-)

Nah, sounds too much like solaris did. But I might try Hurd again, I tried K9, now there is K10, I will give it a shot
