Libervis Network gaming clan?
Tue, 2006-03-07 14:04
Hey,
How would you like to have a libervis network gaming clan, I think it would rock. There is kind of a linuxforums one but nothing seems to be happening with it, and it is a but annoying. We could play FOSS games, like Nexuiz and Cube, and although not FOSS America's Army?
It would be cool

Hey, I personally see nothing wrong with this.
I dont play games though. Im sure you could set one up. Dont see any objections
don't forget armagetron, my personal favourite among FLOSS games.
That sounds like a cool idea and I definitely don't mind it as long as it is only about Free Software games (FLOSS). Otherwise it would be inappropriate to label it "libervis network clan" because libervis network is about promoting freedom, not proprietary software which is contradictory. So, no nonfree games can be accepted into such a project.
There's quite some cool libre games so it shouldn't be a problem.
I am not much of a gamer though and my upload is too expensive with too big latency to play multiplayer, so I'm not sure how much can I be into it... maybe we could play some arcades or turn based multiplayers where latency isn't much of an issue if you want me to play sometimes..
Yeah, of course we want you to play libervisco!
So, me, AndrewB, libervisco and free-zombie are members so far, and the games are:
nexuiz
cube (although i do not like it)
++++
REJOICE ! I am a luuser at FPS.
well, a bit...
my suggestion no.2 : bzflag !
armagetron would provide somke relaxation from killins
Oh yes, bzflag is awesome. I tried it once though it was really hard when latency started getting really bad..
It seems I am pretty much limited to kinds of games not so affected by bad latency. Anyone knows any such games?
atlantik ! (matches take long tho)
So, what's up with this? How are we gonna do it? Will someone set up a wiki for it with game plans or whatever?
I have never been part of an online gaming clan so I'm not sure how exactly it operates.. let me know if you need any help.
Nuxified.org can use all the action it can get. Setting up an active gaming clan can only help.
Also, it's sunday tommorow (or today actually) so maybe we could engage in a multiplayer of some kind already?
Let me know what you're thinking.
Cheers
Daniel
Possibly... But first - does anyone know where to get the source code of nexuiz and cube ?

Nexuiz source code is included with the downloaded zip file.
Cube source code can be downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/projects/cube , however it's _not_the same as the official binary version so don't expect you'll be able to play on the Internet with your own compiled version. And some of Cube's data files which is required for a working game also comes with restrictions like "you may not use this commercially", "you may not modify it without my permission" or "you can only use this with cube", etc.
You could probably get it through apt though, so think you will be ok
@Libervisco: I think we should have a forum section for it, and then call that the Clan forum or something. Then we could put all info in there
An x86_64 binary was included in the nexuiz zip, but I felt like checking whether I can compile it. Worked beautifully.
That about cube source code and non-commercial use only doesn't sound as free as it's cracked up to be...
I now consider cube to be non-free and thus not suited for a librevis clan. Who else ?
I can make a Nuxified Clan forum, but it better be active then.
Is there anyone else interested in this besides the few of us? Maybe you could invite someone interested in this kind of stuff to make it all worthwhile.
Btw, I have tried playing atlantik and I love it (though it is slighty time consuming). So, I am willing to play if a few of you want. We can even make it more interesting by noting games in an atlantik forum thread saying when was played, who won and stuff like that.
You know, this gaming clan seems like a great idea for one other reason (besides fun). It proves that gaming in GNU/Linux community and even with only Free Software games is alive and kicking.
Of course, all games should be Free Software.
As for cube proprietary datafiles, you can't play without them?
Cheers

I don't know, When I played cube i don't think it had anything like that in it. What engine does it use?
Anyways, I was left a *bit* dissapointed by Cube, it just doesnt feel like a game without menus, and the one it has, sucks
Cube has its own engine.
By the way, ATI R200-based video cards have free DRI drivers that can play Nexuiz, so it is playable with all free software.
nexuiz makes my kernel all hot and bothered, pacnicked, whatever (no, no kernel panic, but syslog spamming)
Hey guys, I have an idea that could have this whole clan idea float. Why not have a weekly session of Battle For Wesnoth? A few of us on Nuxified.org would go and play Battle for Wesnoth one day in a week at a certain time and note who played, who won, who was second, third etc., here in forums, basically keeping a kind of top list here. When you win a game you get a point and it is noted here in a special battle for wesnoth thread.
I am suggested Battle For Wesnoth because I think it would really be suitable for everyone. Even if you don't have a graphics card and a particularly fast and low-lag connection, you can still play it because it doesn't require either of those things. If you have a faily stable connection, even if it is dial up, you can play Battle for Wesnoth multiplayer.
So, that could be a way to give this "clan" idea some substance and some cool activity to possibly be one of the things to attract new members to join us.
What do you think?
Yeah, battle for wesnoth would rock L:)
Cool, anyone else?
When would everyone like to battle? :smt063 :smt002
never palyed it
guess I'll check it out...

ditto
(note: I don't realy have much time for such things at the moment, with exams comming up, but I'm sure to try and lay after the exams in a couple of months)
dylunio
I'd play wesnoth
I had a linux clan.. that then died..
recuited almost a dozen members but we ended up not doing anything..
We were the Unix Crusaders [UC] if you want to steal it.
I'd also play wesnoth.
That's the best turn based games I can think of and I can only play turn based over my connection.
Spyro_boy, I wouldn't want to steal that name. It's cool, but something unique is always better.
I think what could work out is agreeing on some multi-player internet game and a server, or a few servers depending on time of the day, where we can all go with a tagged name.
i.e. We could say that we play OpenArena on K-Play's server #01, called
name {NuX}or something. It should probably be a game where you can "just pop in", like an FPS like Nexuiz, OpenArena or BZFlag, or something like Armagetron.
(you may often find me as free::zombie on the K-Play OA servers or as freezombie@(debian|gentoo) on some pretty random Nexuiz server)
@libervis (edit: co): I don't play wesnoth, but as a strategy game just popping in mightn't be ideal ? I personally prefer real-time online games above anything else anyway...
Yeah unfortunately you can't just pop in an ongoing wesnoth game. You can start your own or wait for current ones to finish and then do another one.. or whatever you wish.
I'd love to play real time games, but this stupid overpriced piece of **** connection wont ever allow for such a thing. The lag is unbearable. I can just painfully forget about it until I get a real ADSL (which I can't because in this cows-land that's not yet available).
Liberviso, there must be a way to get you to be able to play the realtime games
How about if we get someone near you to host the server? or maybe work another way out to get you playing
You work so hard, its time to play
Oh I'm not actually working that hard.
I tried to play Nexuiz and OpenArena on multiplayer, but due to the lag it is unplayable. It freezes every now and then as it tries to update what's happening. The only thing I can play without freeze ups and such is bzflag, but that's not because lag isn't there, just because it doesn't affect how it displays things to me. So I can play that, but it will sometimes happen that you shoot me and the bullet (or whatever) will go right through me.
And vice versa, I will sometimes miss even though I've had another tank right on target. So if you're willing to put up with that, I can play bzflag with you.
The lag isn't so much about connection speed as it is about the fact that it takes time for a signal to travel from satellite in orbit to me, cause I use satellite download (that's the only real "broadband" speed I have).
I would be interested in playing bzflag some point..
