My Logitech model 850815-0000 Cordless Mouseman Wheel mouse has suddenly lost its scroll power after working fine for several years. I've rebooted and no help. What can I do?

Did it fell and hit

Did it fell and hit something? I recently had a mouse crash and my scroll doesn't work anymore. It turns out the two sensors which sense the wheel moving are broken. (Don't ask about why it hit *that* hard :-D).

Here is a page that I found on HowStuffWorks.com which gives some insights on how the scroll, among other things works. That's where I figured my scroll sensors were broken..

Maybe yours burned out for some reason. :\

But it's still possible it's not a hardware problem, but something messed up with your Xorg configuration.. not sure..

So.. I guess my suggestions is to check if anything burned out in your mouse, or maybe there is alot of dust inthere that disrupts the scroll sensors. Or you can check your Xorg configuration..

I hope that helps somewhat.

Make sure you have

Make sure you have Option       "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" (maybe with different numbers) in your xorg.conf since this is what controles the scroll. But I don't see how your xorg.conf could have changed unless you or the ubuntu guys played with the conf file.

Try using the mouse with another computer and another mouse with your computer.

Finally got it to work. I

Finally got it to work. I had to reboot a second time, for some reason. Odd. Maybe some software I was working with crashed this particular part of the Xorg driver. But oddly a logout and login in Ubuntu, which redoes the GDM and XOrg, should have fixed it without a reboot. I guess I'll mark this one down as an unknown.

Some time ago I had a zombie

Some time ago I had a zombie mouse: some of the time it would work without trouble, then some time later the buttons would malfunction (changing every click into a doubleclick). For a long time I thought I had a software problem with some apps behaving different from expected (I didn't figure out they were getting double clicks since I don't use anything that normally needs doubleclicking).

I tried another mouse, that worked fine, so I took the old one apart, there was no dust in it or anything, I guess it was just getting old. It was nice to see how the thing works.

To the point: try another mouse.

I've found logging out and back in when using {g,k,x}dm is not always enough to make the X server behave. If I want to be almost sure everything is reloaded I log out, give it ctrl-alt-backspace, then log in again. If that doesn't help, restarting the init/rc script of {g,k,x}dm will.

I've had that kind of zombie

I've had that kind of zombie behaviour. when the battery was low. Out of lazyness, I have pretty much revented to a cable mouse again - much more reliable...

My zombie mouse had a "tail". IMHO wireless mice are too heavy.

I found some problems

I found some problems between my cordless mouse and a new phone I put in. They sometimes compete for Mghz, and very aggressively I might add. I found that the mouse "wins" if it's closer to the transponder, but that's impractical. I have to often click the channel button on the bottom of the mouse with a paperclip when this happens, and it happens about once or twice a week.

However, this was unrelated to the scroll bug I had with XWindows, earlier. That was probably related to an app I ran that probably messed with XWindows in memory. Don't know which app that was, but a second reboot caused this bug to go away for some odd reason.

I have a mouse...

I've recently switched my desktop to programs/tools that don't need a mouse...and I haven't touched it in a few days. Smiling

Post your xorg.conf?

I have the same mouse and am having trouble getting button 6 (the side button) to work. xev doesn't show the event. I've tried countless variations of configurations and still to no avail.

Would you mind posting the mouse section of your xorg.conf?

Thanks!
