Currently the "Newest Forum Topics" block wastes a lot of valuable space in the middle part of the website. I would suggest dividing it into 2 columns and presenting 4 most recent threads instead of just 2 (perhaps making the excerpt a bit shorter, too).

Hmm not a bad idea. I wonder

Hmm not a bad idea. I wonder if it would make the page look a bit more complex than it is though, but I suppose it's worth trying.

I'll just have to figure out how to make it in two columns since it's actually just a simple php block right now..

ideas for making nuxified more usable

The complexity of the webpage is another issue. I think it is complex already and needs some redesign, but I'm not an expert on these things, unfortunately. For one thing - I'm sure there is too many blocks like Recent blog posts, Recent topic updates, Recent replies, Personal bar (with lots of options), Who's online, Who's new, Infor about members, Links, GNU and PolishLinux RSS sections, etc. I guess it should be somehow divided onto separate pages...

Quick ideas:
- I would certainly move the personal bar out to a separate page, just showing a link "Personal" or sth like that next to the links to Forums, Blogs and Polls.
- Who's online, Who's new and the stats - I would put it under the forums
- The article excerpts could be much shorter, making the whole main webpage shorter. I think the main site should not be longer than 1.5-2 screens

Gererally, in my opinion, the start page should be in the first place attractive and useful - providing only the key information. For nuxified it would be: the article excerpts and the forum threads + links to other sections.

These are just wild ideas though Smiling I'm not a designer neither I'm an expert on usability issues. Applying Google Analytics and checking what links users actually click could be a move in the right direction as well.

I am willing to do what

I am willing to do what would be the best for everyone, or at least most of everyone. I personally have some fears regarding removal of certain blocks from certain places but that may very well be just me and my sometimes unfounded fears. Maybe I should have some more faith.

My fear mostly comes from worrying wether the new user will be able to find something if we make it more minimalist. If we remove "recent blogs" block will enough people read blog post? Same goes with comments to recent forum topics (recently updated topics block). Will people notice when a post is being replied?

Now admittelly a "who's new", "new members" and stats blocks are there more to create a feeling of active and growing community.

But in any case I am willing to make changes that would suit most people and make the site simpler and more attractive. And I would love to hear your feedback on how exactly everyone thinks this would be best done, that is, how would it best suit you because I am apparently not the best guy to judge it. Eye

I'll have to take a look at google analytics too, thanks for the idea.

Are there any further

Are there any further opinions about this?

I've been a bit more busy with the other site these days, but we need to have some action here too.. so whatever changes need to be done should be done in reasonable time.

Thanks

Possibly slightly off-topic

Possibly slightly off-topic in this thread, but I'll say it anyway... I think nuxified.org has too many sidebar blocks -- they are what makes the site look complex and busy.

"Recent Replies" and "Recent Topic Updates" on the right can be accessed as full pages, as I recall... why have them on every page?

These blocks were put there

These blocks were put there because I thought less people will miss newest posts that way. It makes it more obvious, but as said, if I am wrong and if most of you think it'd be better to remove it and leave only a separate page to the task then I'll do it.

It's not that they are not

It's not that they are not helpful, but I just think the main site is too bloated. Perhaps it would be a good think to differenciate between forum sites and the main website, i.e. putting the forum-related links on forums only.
But again, relocating single blocks won't do it. Someone competent should take a look at this and share his thoughts, since I'm not a usability specialist (I wish I was).

Well we could experiment. I

Well we could experiment. I could change things a bit and then see how that functions and then change things as and if issues arise.

I'll experiment a bit and change things to a new setup and then you can try it and comment on it. Smiling

improvements coming..

Sorry I haven't done much in this regard lately. I was busy with some other things, online and offline. I have done a simplification of our sister site at www.libervis.com thanks to some suggestions by dylunio and ariadacapo (Olivier). Some ideas could be taken from there and applied to Nuxified.org as well although it is a little bit more challenging in some ways.

The goal is, of course, to simplify while keeping the focus on primary and leaving room for secondary features of the site. Primary are forums and Free Software support and secondary includes articles, blogs, screenshots and even polls. Suggestions are still welcome.

I am glad to see forums active, even regarding support questions, even when I am not around all the time. Eye

Thank you
