TInyMCE or not?

What do you all think about this WYSIWYG rich text editor (powered by TinyMCE)? Do you use it or have you disabled it in your profile?

Should we keep it or just get rid of it, especially considering that there seems to be an option (a module) that would put phpbb style formating buttons (like for bold, italic, underline and such).

Also, does it work fast enough for you? Do you think it impacts the performance?

I have personally just turned it off in my profile so I generally don't use it unless replying to someone who used it for his post, when I just hit the "enable rich-text" link at the bottom of the text area.

Thanks
Daniel

Here is an idea about

Here is an idea about TinyMCE..

Since with TinyMCE enabled by default (meaning that it will always show unless user specifies in a profile) most users will be using the TinyMCE editor even if they would otherwise be fine with normal editor which means alot more content would go through TinyMCE and would be in TinyMCE generated html that you can see in normal editor.

That html can be slightly annoying to users who do select in their profile to use normal editor, as they have to deal with TinyMCE generated tags they otherwise wouldn't.

Anyway, the suggestion is to enable normal editor by default and TinyMCE only when people click "enable rich-text" below reply forms or select it in their user profiles.

I think that this way we can have much more clean content around here as most people would probably be fine without WYSIWYG.

Also, a good thing is that when you start editing in normal editor, and wish to switch to rich-text, the text you've written so far will appear well formed in it as well, which is not true vice versa. Smiling

So what do you think? I might switch to that mode just so you can see how would that feel and then post if you like it that way or you liked it better how it was so far.

Thanks
Daniel

TinyMCE is cute, but not

TinyMCE is cute, but not really necessary. The only one of its features I have used so far is the smiley button... If there's a clearly visible "rich text editor" button to switch to TinyMCE, I don't see why it should be enabled by default. It might encourage people to go all crazy in their posts Sticking out tongue .

Sometimes it behaves weird: backspace stops working. I'd like to switch it off in my profile but I can't figure out how to do that... I guess I'm overlooking a checkbox or something.

Go to "my account" from your

Go to "my account" from your menu and then click on the "edit" tab.

On a page that appears there should be a drop down link below account information section called "TinyMCE rich-text settings". Click on it to expand and you'll see "default state" drop down where you can choose either false or true. To disable it by default you set it to false, of course.

* I've had several cases

* I've had several cases where backspace did double backspace.

* I've had another case where backspace, no matter how many times I hit it, would never execute and was stuck. Switching to plain text allowed me to undo that.

*  Why, after I type the first line, the next line indents by one space on the left?

I'm not sure. I've never had

I'm not sure. I've never had very good experiences with WYSIWYG editors so far to be honest. They all tend to have some weird anomalies and yet many still use them.

I am not using TinyMCE myself and everyone who has it currently turned on can easily disable it as described above and use normal text area (both simple html and bbcode works).

For new users TinyMCE is set as optional too, not turned on by default, so noone is forced to use it.

remove TInyMCE?

I'm thinking, should we completely remove the TinyMCE (WYSIWYG) functionality? It seems to conflict with the text box resizing feature which should be available by default, but isn't due to TinyMCE.

How many of you actually use that thing?

Thanks

Alrighty.. what about newer users? Smiling

I'm leaning towards removing it.. most people who know phpbb probably know basic bbcode as well so I guess it shouldn't be a problem, right?

BBCode works.

You might have a page you could link to with some simple bbcode stuff in it for new users. (the link could be next to Subject or something).

There's actually a link to bbcodes within the "input format" drop down link. It links to a nice bbcode guide.

tinyMCE is out

As most of you didn't use it and have even had some annoying issues with it, while noone else has pleaded for that feature to stay, I've removed the rich text editor AKA TinyMCE (AKA WYSIWYG editor). Now we're left with the good old text editor where you can manually enter all the bbcodes and basic html (click on "input format" drop link below to read more about tags you can use).

If anyone starts to miss TinyMCE or anyone else feels the need for WYSIWYG please feel free to scream at me! If enough of you scream I'll get it back. Eye

Btw, text editors are now resizable again. Weeee!
