A good music player for the CLI?

If I want to get some music on the shell I usually use mpg123.

nice, is there any more?

I don't usually use these, but I heard of mpd and there's also cmus and moc that I found on the quick lookup of Arch repos..

Do you mean textmode (curses) or true CLI?
Mp3blaster is nice but not true CLI like, for example, mpg123

By the way, IIRC mpg123 isn't free software but mpg321 is.

I tried muc player today (the command is mucp) and it's pretty neat. It is a nice replacement for beep-media-player for playing local files.

Oh and mucp is cursed.. J/K, I mean curses based.

mpg123 is GPL, and the lib inside is LGPL.

I use mplayer, I think the xmms2 project will also be good when it is devloped.

Use GNU Screen with mplayer, it is very handy

i don't play music on the console much, mostly 'cause i'm not on the console much. But i use mpg321 or mplayer when i am.

OK, so mplayer and mpg321 seem to be getting most of the votes, down to those two now

I like to use the 'play' utility from sox. Supports damn near every sound format you will ever need to use.

This thread may be a bit old, but xmms2 is perfectly suited for the job, and not limited to the CLI. A few nice features: the music is played by a dæmon, which means that you can, in a normal shell session, just throw in commands like xmms2 next. the music is played by a dæmon which can be controlled over the network. For instance, I have xmms2d running on my desktop (where the speakers are), but can control it from irssi running on another machine if I want to. If you feel like it, you can jump between different interfaces, such as plain CLI, ASCII-graphical, GTK, a tray icon etc, or use them at once, easily, without losing medialib data or anything. XMMS2 supports cover art. XMMS2 can be used with last.fm. XMMS2 contains a few lines written by me. XMMS2 is in Debian. XMMS2 has an awesome (wording of a user) tray icon written/maintained by me. XMMS is the one single official successor to the most popular *NIX music player of all time.

XMMS2 is getting installed on my system.

I gotta give it another chance after that post. I'm installing esperanza client for which synaptic says is made to be easy to use, but I'd like to try your tray again.

I am fan of mplayer... and I prefer CLI istead

I used to use mplayer, but I only use mplayer for videos now and I'm quite happy with madplay for music.

madplay, huh? I tried looking around for a site on it but I can't seem to find anything that looks related.
