Partly out of curiosity and partly the desire to report some useful data to Radeon R300 free drivers development project I am looking for some benchmark utilities for graphics cards, but can be for other things too.
Any suggestions?

On the page R330 Benchmark in the DRI Wiki it mentions Quake 3 as a benchmark.
Since it's not a free game I'd suggest trying some free games that offer displaying the FPS, like VDrift.
I think games are a better benchmark than GLXGears because they work harder on the GPU.

Well Open Arena comes to mind then. I just need to see how to enable FPS showing in it. Nexuiz would probably be even better. Pity it segfaults on my machine as soon as I start walking around, picking up a weapon or start shooting. :\
About glxgears, the fact that there exist an option for it that goes like this;
It has FPS disabled by default and the way to get it to show is either by the above option (it really works) or simply -printfps.
-iacknowledgethatthistoolisnotabenchmarkproves just how much X.org hackers care to tell you that glxgears is NOT a benchmark.Libervis.com | Discover machinima
