Concerned distro :- Debian Etch
Number of times Successfully Installed *Debian etch* by me =6
2 times with Base System and DESKTOP Environment
4 times with just Base system
Additional Info :- Have slow Dialup , Method of installation is :- DVD , Have Debian etch 3 dvd set, I am the only user of this PC , I have the user and root passwds.
Problem :- ONLY with BASE SYSTEM installs
The problem is that I Cant su .(to any user but my concern is to su as root) [only the Base System Installs ] or sudo
Say I am logged in as non-root user khaleel , typeed su , hit enter , typed correct root passwd , it says Authentication Failure , SORRY !
say non root member with login name is khaleel
as root I ran KDE , in KDE User Manager khaleel is member of
audio
Cdrom
Dialup
Dip
Games
Irc
Ip (or is it LP?)
man
src
ssh
sudo
video
wheel
www-data
-----JUST LIKE in the Base system + Desktop environment install (but there I can successfully SU )
here it says Authentication failure , Sorry !
I have duscussed this problem at linuxquestions.org , linuxforums.org
at IRC i have asked at #debian , #linuxbeginner , #tuxhacker , but no help all consider it as WIRED

That's weird indeed. Are you sure your keyboard works well? Are you sure the dvd is free of errors?

normal log in

Can you normally log into root (without using su)?

Are you sure the hard drive is okay?

Are you sure the / filesystem is okay?

When was the last time you dusted your computer?
