Changing the GGL favicon

Changing the GGL favicon

A visitor suggested we use a different page icon for GGL: the head of a GNU on the image at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Floss_draft.png

I like the idea very much (I really have a problem with Ewig's Tux I must say). What do you think?

I had been looking for a colourful gnu head for a while, so this one may be used on new link buttons soon.

Although I like Tux personally, that one looks nice. If it'll look alright in such a small size required for the favicon, then great. I've no objections. Smiling

Hehe, that was my suggestion so I definitely agree with it. It's interesting to see that that picture has now been superseded on Wikipedia by a new vector version (always a good plan), though it has the black and white gnu head now. It also has Tux at the top now instead, which means it isn't so good for use in articles about the free software movement rather than the open source movement.

The new icon is up on the test pages. [you'll need to clear your cache] I'll put it on the real site this week-end if no-one opposes it...

EDIT: Does anyone know if .ico favicons with transparence are well-supported by IE? This one has a white background.

Transparence in favicons

I've tested out a few pages which have favicons with transparent backgrounds (including the GGL homepage) in IE 7, and they seem to be fine.

Indeed, page icon transparency is supported by IE 5.5+, just only in .ico files.
