Choosing games for the upcoming gaming tournament (free data or not?)

The planned gaming tournament is going to be organized jointly by Nuxified.org and Cluenet.org. It's purpose is to promote Free Software gaming as well as have some fun and bring some excitement to our communities. Since it would promote Free Software games the consensus is for all games included in this tourney to be Free Software (Free as in Freedom not price or beer or vodka. Eye ). However there is a bit of a disagreement regarding data files considering that data is not necessarily defined as "software".

So we have two choices:

  • 1. Accept games with data not under licenses which can be defined as "Free" per the Free Software definition"
  • 2. Not accept games with data under such, according to FSD, non-free licenses.

Now I know to some of you the whole talk about licensing is probably tedious and boring, but it is part of what made GNU/Linux world we all enjoy so much as exciting as it is, so perhaps you can bear as much to express an opinion and vote.

So if we choose number 1 we can choose from a bit more broad set of games because we can then use games which have a Free Software engine yet require "shareware" data. An example of this is Quake1 and Quake4.

If we choose 2 then Quakes are pretty much out (we're left with OpenArena and Nexuiz which are still quite good), but we can be say that all of the games we use in the tourney as completely Free in both freedom and price so this brings us and observers quite a bit of clarity. We then don't have to depend on shareware sources.

So, what does everyone think? What shall it be?

Edit: Once it becomes clear what our choice is feel free to also add suggestions for games that we should include.

I personally am against games that are not fully free works, but, IMHO, we should put it up for vote.

Also, ClueNet looks interesting; I'll have a good look at that :-)

Good point. That would be my vote too actually, but let's see what others say.

I see only one person has posted their opinion so far. Hopefully we can see more results soon. Smiling

I have set up a poll (with rather broad options, I really hope votes will be confined to the upper two) at http://www.nuxified.org/poll/which_games_should_be_selected_for_the_upcoming_tournament

Ok, looks like most votes

Ok, looks like most votes are in favor of going with only all-free games. If there is anyone else who'd like to vote this is your last chance.

So what should we call the tourny? "Nuxified Cluenet Gaming Tournament" or even more descriptive "Nuxified Cluenet Free Software Gaming Tournament" sound a bit dull and wordy, but I'm not sure if there are any better alternatives..

Maybe we should just call it a "Free Software Gaming Tournament" considering that we might be the first with such a general theme and focusing only on Free Software games so we can claim that name. And below it on our banners and promos we could just say "by Nuxified.org and Cluenet.org". Smiling

What do you think?

Although after talking to

Although after talking to RMS it appears, according to his opinion at least (and he is one of the most experienced guys with these kinds of issues), that using games with a free engine, but not as free data would be OK, the most votes so far are in favor of both free data and engines so we should proceed with that for now.

So, let's list games we want included in a tourney. We should probably take into consideration time constraints so maybe having too many games wouldn't be good, so we should choose carefully. Also all chosen games should be fairly easy to install and available from repositories, be sufficiently stable and such that likely players here would be familiar enough with them.

My obvious first suggestions are: Nexuiz, OpenArena and maybe BZFlag.

Please make your suggestions.

Edit: Also, who is definitely interested in participating?

Thank you

Smoke my images? Hey,

Smoke my images? Laughing out loud Hey, actually, just do it! Eye

I've made another version (in attachment) which actually mentions Free Software. I figure the first one doesn't make it too obvious that it's about promoting Free Software games.

If anyone has a better idea for a better slogan fitting Free Software just shout. Eye

Thanks.
