Freespire and PCLinuxOS users - anybody?

Freespire and PCLinuxOS users - anybody?

We would like to introduce 2 new distributions on PolishLinux.org: PCLinuxOS and Freespire. They seem to be quite popular and user-friendly, so it would be good to get their descriptions on the vortal (and probably dump Yoper since nobody believes they are going to stand back soon).

Anyone on the forums using Freespire or PCLinuxOS are welcome to participate in creating the descriptions of these systems.

On the other hand - we just published a renewed version of Xandros description thanks to James T. Sheldon. Any comments are welcome as well.

Best regards,
michuk

Great!

Yeah, I guess those 2 are alright. Personally, I haven't used them, but from what I've heard they're pretty easy for n00bs to install and use. Alt Smile

Well both of these distros

Well both of these distros include proprietary software in the distribution by default, especially Freespire. PCLinuxOS has a fully free "minime" CD version and I've heard that there may be a full (not minimal) free default version as well.

Anyway, I don't mind adding them if you'll just state the fact that it includes proprietary nonfree stuff as I am sure you would have anyway. Smiling

Of couse the proprietary driver issue will be mentioned, just as it is mentioned for Xandros which ships not only proprietary drivers but also own non-free software.

I still want to write about those distros, because the key point is to inform the user about different possibilities. We want to stay as objective as we can in the distro descriptions sections. For reviews it's a different story of course.

Anyway, it's the users' choice whether they want to use such software or not.

Freespire has a "open

Freespire has a "open source" edition which is mostly free software, except the unrar program and several musics which are under Creative Commons non-commercial/noderivs license. Anyways they are easy to remove.

The Freespire description

The Freespire description has been just added to the comparisons. There is a small discussion about the changes in the wiki: http://wiki.polishlinux.org/freespire/

not popular

Actually, those aren't popular, just Linspire is talked about a lot because of the new CNR.com/ESR thing.

Yeah, Freespire/Linspire

Yeah, Freespire/Linspire don't strike me as popular either, but I think it doesn't hurt to have it in the comparisons, especially since the table actually says when the distro is or isn't fully Free Software. I've nothing to object about. Smiling
