Gaming tournament ideas

We've once talked about holding a Battle For Wesnoth tournament, but it didn't come through.

Well, the option is still open, and we might do it with other games too. Maybe it could be held in form of special events we all arrange beforehand in forums and then hold on a day that we set.

The only issue, as far as my connection goes, is that I can't play real-time games due to my lag. I can only do turn based multiplayer like wesnoth.

But hey, I don't have to participate in all tournamets. You guys can well organize a Nexuiz or OpenArena tournament using these forums (for tracking results, wins, losses etc.). We just need to appoint a trusted moderator for those to ensure that all is fair.

So, fire up your ideas in this thread!

Because.. who said gaming on GNU/Linux is dead?! We don't even need proprietary games anymore. We've got stuff from shooters to strategies all as Free Software!

Hmm I wonder if a masssssive LAN party could be held in each of our countries and hometowns, and we all connect to the battle. That would be interesting.

Well, that'd be quite easy provided we all have good connections and can be available at the same time.

The one with the best connection just starts up a server and everyone connects to it and plays. Smiling

I still haven't forgot

I still haven't forgot about the whole idea of a gaming tournament or a gaming clan or some sort of a gaming project on Nuxified. It's been talked about quite a bit so far, but nothing really coherent came from it.

So maybe we should finally start talking about it as a real thing, organize something. The simplest idea is to just have people who are on these forums "sign up" to our gaming project and report when they play with others who signed up. In these "reports" they would basically say what they played, who won and how many times. This info would be collected through our gaming forum in special threads, and the final "stats" would then be put onto a nice homepage for the gaming project, either hosted on a subdomain of Nuxified.org or Nuxified.com.

Then we can think of a way to bring some excitement into the whole thing, top lists of best gamers for certain games, gamers of the month and whatnot. Feel free to suggest your own ideas.

Playing would in this case go quite loosely. All that matters is that if you're playing with another member on Nuxified, you report it to our forum (especially if you won, be proud and say it) and you basically get a point (or points if you won multiple times) for winning that particular game. But of course, we can organize bigger tournaments when a greater number of people are available for a greater amount of time.

So to lay it down in simple terms, we'd have threads in the gaming forum like this:

- Wesnoth winners (a thread where every time you win against another Nuxified member, you specify so and get a point)
- OpenArena winners (same as above, but for OpenArena)

and same for Nexuiz or any other Free Software game. You get the idea.

Also note that I now have a new server (although virtual and remote) so maybe we could run a daemon there, or maybe a bot which you could report your winnings to. That's another possibility too, for those who love to be on IRC. It's just a vague idea right now, but you're welcome to suggest other ideas in which we could use this new server.

So what do you think? Shall we give gaming some buzz in this community or not? Eye
