1) register warumgnulinux.de, to avoid hijacking
2) go to a large German forum and discuss a new url there. I speak German but not well enough to choose a domain, and there aren't too many German speakers here ;-) . If someone comes up with a better idea, we might be able to take it (losing 20eur, but that's ok with my finances, knowing how important a TLD is), otherwise stick to warumgnulinux.de
Yes, that sounds reasonable, but 20 EUR is a lot. To tell you the truth, I didn't expect you to be permitted to register it - I thout .de was Germans only.
hmrph, we have a problem clear winner of the poll is 'linuxfueralle.de', but, alas, it is already taken. sorry about that, i should have checked the availability of all the TLDs before starting the poll.
there is currently nothing online on 'linuxfueralle.de', so we could try to ask the current owner whether he would be willing to hand it over?
no worry it happens
The domain gnulinux.fr slipped from my hands, only in a matter of hours (I actually registered it but someone was quicker and the registrar had to refund me). I also had false hopes for various other domains.
We sure can ask the owner of linuxfueralle.de . If you can do it (my German is terrible) it'd be great, don't hesitate to speak in the name of GNU/Linux Matters.
Another name that got suggested in the poll is darumlinux.de or darumgnulinux.de . That sure sounds terrific to me but it seems only one person suggested it... I guess my German is not good enough to judge.
I'll leave the decision entirely to you German native speakers - there's no hurry.
I'll write to the owner.
edit: this is the mail I sent:
an Olivier Cleynen wenden könnten. Möchten oder können Sie
das nicht tun, werde ich gerne vermitteln.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
im Auftrag von GNU/Linux Matters
So Olivier, if a Mr Hans-Joachim Schütz contacts you in English or French soon, be delighted and tell us ;-)
So now we're dropping "GNU" from a domain name too?
that has been a concern of me, too, and one of the reasons why i preferred 'warumgnulinux.de'. OTOH, passeralinux.fr doesn't have GNU in it either.
I got a response; Here is the content:
Basically, we could have the domain for 50 EUR (roughly what he wasted on the name), if we keep the domain at least a year (and don't sell it to a commercial Linux software/supprt company, a publishing company or something like that).
What say-you, people ? Olivier ?
I really don't know, it's entirely up to you.
If you believe it's better to go for linuxfueralle.de , I'll purchase it, no problem. I don't like the conditions by principle (huh? we can't use it for what we want?) but that's the dirty trade of domain names I guess.
If you prefer a "GNU" in the domain, go for it! I'm really not going to interfere here. Just pick a domain you believe sounds good and people will be able to remember.
I'd say we go for for the deal and purchase linuxfueralle.de : it's the clear winner of the poll, and 50E is not overly expensive IMHO. i don't think the other conditions pose a problem, since it's limited to one year and no one intends to give it to a company, anyway.
in case the money is not an issue, we could even keep warumgnulinux.de, since olivier has already registered it, and have it forward to linuxfueralle.de. BTW is there already a possibility to donate to GNU/Linux Matters ;o) ?
I have no problem with the condition - He's basically not getting anything out of the deal (the 50 EUR have already been spent on the domain), and the conditions are there that he has some security that the domain is really being used in our worthy way.
I think linuxfueralle.de is good, too. Olivier, you're the guy with the money and the founder; tell me what to answer (like, y/n and whether I should just ask for bank account data or something...)
any news on this?
I myself are in favour of buying the domain, but Olivier is the one with the money and management so I'm still waiting for a response from that end.
I'm sorry for disappearing. I'm about to quit my studies and jump into the GNU/Linux Matters bandwagon, much sooner than I anticipated. It takes time to organise. Soon there'll be no more lapses like this.
Yes let's buy the domain. Free-zombie if you can get me in touch with that person I'll get the domain. I can read German pretty well and write readably enough to organise the transfer; I also have a German bank account which will make the payment easier.
NB: I'll catch up with other threads very soon.
no problem - i don't think we are in a particular hurry. i was just pushing the thread to the top cause i thought that the owner of linuxfueralle.de was probably waiting for an answer.
sorry to push this thread to the top once again... but has there been any progress on this? i'm curious to learn whether the deal could be made or not and looking forward to the german translation going online.
Sorry to be late on this... free-zombie asked the person to contact me - I had no news, so I sent him an email today. I hope this will be over very soon now.
The owner replied to me this evening (he was travelling), and announced he will be able to sell the domain to us this week. I'll keep this thread updated.
Since I had no reply I tried once again today. I'd say if we have no response before the end of the week, we should back down to another domain.
I now have contact with the owner and made payment.
For the transfer, as per the specific regulations for the .de TLDs, we need a German address. I do not currently live in Germany, so can anyone please help out?
All we need is a German letterbox - the TLD owner will remain GNU/Linux Matters. I don't expect much mail to come there - so all that there is to be done is to read/forward any important mail or death threats ;-)
Please contact me directly (olivier@GGL , contact form or profile) if you can help out - thanks!
i can't help you on this, since i live in switzerland.
free-zombie proposed his address so that is fine now. We're now going through what I believe to be the last paperwork (the procedure involves faxes :-/ ) so it's getting ready at last. I'll keep updated...
