Grouping and teaming for Tremulous Tournament

Nice thing about Tremulous is that we have 7 confirmed clans in (hopefully 1 more of the 4 rest will confirm in reasonable time too) because we can assume they're experienced players. A bit tricky thing about Tremulous though is that we have 17 confirmed sole players which are yet to be teamed up, some of which are probably much more experienced than the others, and they have a sort of a disadvantage due to the fact they're just being formed for this tourney.

So let's see what we've got. These are the currently confirmed existing clans:

- {tHc}
- CY
- [HUN]
- -Camperz- / -CZ-
- =V=energetic
- kiwi
- [psy]

These are the currently confirmed individual players:

- KIAaze
- Dracone
- zmef420
- plouj
- Skateinmars
- 3of12
- Genie
- thirdstreettito
- Jose
- reptiler
- Amanieu
- Exclamation
- Thunder_PT
- filipecerk
- xdrt
- Kriegsgott
- Phenax

Ok, so now the idea is this. First of all ideally each team should have all its members from the same continent. Starting with Asia where we have least players from this would definitely mean reptiler and Amanieu should be in the same team, but for it to be complete we need 3 more players from Asia to join them.

Second thing to strive for is to have at least one more experienced team player in each team, someone who can basically serve as their leader helping them make a better stand against existing clans (note that I'm making no claim that just because they already exist the existing clan must always be stronger than whatever combination we come up with here).

As for grouping I think this should be less of an issue than in some games, although this may be because I have less insight into how strong each of the teams would be here. I think, if we could come up with at least 4 teams before saturday evening GMT, we can have first qualification matches in that group. We can then group the rest afterwards until everyone is lined up.

Opinions welcome.

I actually am quite

I actually am quite experienced in other shooters, having played games like Unreal Tournement (the original and 2004, both solo and in team-modes) and Quake 3 online when I was still in Germany. Here I always had that stupid ping-problem.
As for the games we're playing now I'm pretty much a newbie, I absolutely don't know the maps (as I used to do on the aforementioned games) and don't even know if there's any special moves that help you survive.

I hope we can get a few more peoples from the area, so that we can have a "Team Asia".

- East Coast USA

- I know 3of12, Kriegsgott, Phenax, Exclamation, thirdstreettito, and Genie.

- 5 Most individually skilled players, in no order: Me (Some will back me up on this Smiling), Kriegsgott, 3of12, Phenax, Exclamation.

- I would like to be away from 3of12 and Kriegsgott, to see how they adapt while in a team lacking their familiar buddies of NT clan. If we're teamed up, then ok, that's fine, but I'd prefer not to. I won't mind any other team, just keep me away from those two if you can help it.

This is what I wrote in my email:

I am located in Alabama, USA.

I know dracone, genie, kriegsgott, exclamation and thirdstreettitto

Dracone is a good player, kriegsgott is a great builder and I don't know about the others. (Oh wait, phenax has really REALLY good aim, so he's a good player)

I'd be interested in teaming up with the listed people, but all except for one of them are in my clan Sticking out tongue

Directly quoted from E-Mail.

I'm in North Carolina, USA

I know Dracone, Genie, 3of12, me(thirdstreettito), Amanieu, Exclamation, and Kriegsgott.

I would say that Dracone, 3of12, Exclamation, Kriegsgott, and I are the most experienced players out of all of them.

I would like to be teamed up with my friends; Dracone, 3of12, Exclamation, Kriegsgott, and Genie.

By the way, Dracone, 3of12, Kriegsgott, Genie, and I are all basically in the same clan.

So far the picture I'm

So far the picture I'm getting from your replies is that about 7 of these 10 players are actually one clan who decided to spread out instead of playing as one in the tourney, yet its members prefer each other as teammates. Quite an odd and sort of "cute" situation. Eye

But, the thing is, since you (or your leader) decided to split out the likelihood is that you WILL be split out. So while you may be lucky to have one or two players from your own clan in the same team the rest would probably be others, who you may not know well and who may be beginners too (not all of them though).

So I'll try to put together teams which have its structure like this.

2 players from this spread-out clan.
1 or so player among the rest who is deemed at least a bit more experienced than beginners.
2 beginners

That'd be roughly it. Essentially the more experienced players should lead the team while beginners should be open to listening to the instructions of those more experienced. That is, of course, the way I see these teams having most chance in the tourney. It is ultimately up to each team.

Of course, those who specifically said they don't want to be in a team with some people (like Dracone above) will have their wish granted. Shouldn't be a problem to do.

Of course, keep that feedback coming. We need to hear from everyone on the list, including beginners!

Will the teams be announced with enough time spaced between then and the actual event for preparation?

All of them are good players.
I would like to be teamed up with reptiler because of our location, and if there aren't enough Asian players, then with people from the US West coast, because I have a reasonable p[ing with them as long as we don't play on EU servers.

ok then

I'm near Chicago and don't really care whom I play with. I just want to have fun. I've played with Ex before, maybe some others on the list.

Tell yah what, all those that want to play but don't have much experience can be on my team.

Bring on the carnage!

Yes, we should be in one

Yes, we should be in one team, maybe there's even somebody else from our region around. Don't have an overview over all players and where they are from.

But anyway, it's good to know that I'm not the only one living in the land of bad pings.

Essentially yes, since we

Essentially yes, since we don't actually force any scheduling before the one naturally fitting everyone's availability. So as long a time is needed for everyone to prepare, practice etc. that long a space between teams formation and the match involving that particular team will be.

To keep everything in one

To keep everything in one place, I'll repeat here.

-- I live in US east coast.
-- I can play almost whenever if given a day/ day and a half of prior notice. Many hours would be acceptable even without notice, but it does depend on the day (the second part of the week is when I am most busy). I can never play between about 3 to 7 AM.
-- I do want time to practice with the team and receive a few pointers or a player assignment/role.
-- I think of the 4 games in the fest, I am weakest at this one. And I am fairly new to every game.
-- Fun is the name of the game.

As mentioned earlier, I know ex, drac, third, krieg, 3of12.

I personally would only liked to be teamed up with Dracone as I still need experience in taking orders from my leader, and am at the stage where i don't know if i can trust the judgments of some of the other players here (exluding krieg, exclamation, 3of12). no offense to anybody else out there, but i know that tremulous is one of the hardest games to master in terms of strategy (i have been playing for 1 year now, only within these last 2 months, have i come to the skill level to join the training clan for NT (dracone, 3of12's, kriegs clan). So ya.

I am in america and have no ping issues with the Mercenaries guild server. i will check on the server in asia, for the european server, i have a ping of about 200-400.

Yes, you are among them, since this email is sent to all of these at

I know filipecerk, xdrt and 2xtreme. I know HellGuardian too, who subscribed and confirmed for this tournament, but I'm not sure he was accepted.

I have no clue, I started playing this last week. All the 4 guys I mentioned in the last question are newbies too, but we don't really care if we are the noobest team in the tornament.

Alright, I am proposing

Alright, I am proposing teams as follows:

Team 1:

Dracone
Genie
thirdstreettito
Jose
Amanieu
reptiler

Team 2:

Exclamation
3of12
Kriegsgott
Phenax
zmef420

Team 3:

Thunder_PT
filipecerk
xdrt
2xtreme
HellGuardian

This is not ideal, but it doesn't seem like we'll get the ideal that easily.

Team 1 has two asian people in its otherwise US team, but in total it has 6 members so one can be a backup, which I propose to be one of the asians depending on their availability. So they can switch between each other when necessary.

Team 2 is most perfect all things considered except that it lacks a backup player.

Team 3 is conditional because it consists of people who didn't reply to the last email. Thunder_PT who basically mentioned all these other participants as his preferred team mates would be expected to make sure they show up. I would like them to post here ASAP!! Otherwise the existence of the third team is to be questioned. If they don't show up soon (today, tomorrow at the latest) we will put Thunder_PT to one of the two above teams so they have one more to work with in case they need backups.

That's it.

All in all, this is, if third team above works out, 14 teams. Listed together this is what we have:

1 - {tHc}
2 - CY
3 - [HUN]
4 - -Camperz- / -CZ-
5 - =V=energetic
6 - kiwi
7- {wwF*}
8 - {S}pikers
9 - [psy]
10 - r3v
11 - Challenge Everything
12 - Team 1
13 - Team 2
14 - Team 3

14 teams is not such a nice number for groups. We'll have to have 2 groups of 5 and 1 group of 4. Groups would be done randomly, but I'm thinking that only one intervention to randomness could make sense: grouping per location. So US and EU teams would be in group with other US or EU teams, just to make scheduling a bit easier.

I have no preference for

I have no preference for the teams one way or the other.

With the current 6 player Team 1, I volunteer be the odd man out whenever necessary. I am very new to this game.

In the meantime, I could use practice. I had a horrible time finding my way around the darkness when I played as an alien. I also had trouble seeing aliens in the dark. And I can't believe how easily aliens kill humans. I can understand how team strategy would play a big part in this game. Too bad I lack it sorely.

The tournament begins with

The tournament begins with the first match and we can have a first match when we'll have first groups. And if most people agree with the above teaming then we can actually form some groups almost immediately. So it should be very soon.

Only thing I worry about is that I wont have much or almost any time for the fest in the next few days because I'm attending a conference and hosting one of the conference goers at home as well.

Hey teammate. ;-) So that's how we get together again, after our Nexuiz-match.

Well, I have no mentionable experience with Tremulous too, but I like darkness, probably one reason why I loved Doom 3. ;-)
I'll see that I spend some time to get a little playtime on Tremulous to get a bit used to how it goes.

Is there any possibility to play with bots? Maybe a mod, or just a setting I was too blind to find?

If you want to play a practice Nexuiz match some time, just let me know. I think you will advance to the next round. Not sure if I provide good practice since the players you'll meet will use different strategies. I can defend myself only in the downer map, but maybe you can practice your rocket shooting some more so you kill yourself less Smiling .

Jose, I suggest, whenever you go on tremulous, press refresh on server select, then press the Find Friend Button and type in Dracone then press search, go to his server, and maybe ask him if he could give you some tips. Also if you ever see a player with the name Bodyorgan, you should watch him, he is good. Basically, look at the people listed above as being good, if you see them watch them.

in console (~ key) type /r_gamma [num] <- low num, 1 is default, i recommed 1.5 or 2 don't surround number with these things []
