Haiku OS in qemu, but mouse stopped working

Hello

I have downloaded Haiku OS (a free BeOS clone) image to try to run it in qemu and easily enough it works and I was able to boot and see a nice Haiku OS desktop. However, it was rather slow, even for simple tasks like moving and resizing windows. There was a message at launching qemu though which said that qemu accelerator wasn't activated as there was no /dev/kqemu. I asked in #qemu channel on freenode about how to activate it and they said I had to build or install kqemu, which I easily enough (thanks to it being available in Arch AUR) did.

However, now when I start qemu with Haiku OS image and boot it again (succesfuly) mouse and keyboard don't seem to be working and I am wondering what could be the problem.

Does anyone has any hints?

My plan is to play a bit with Haiku using qemu and possibly write up a nice review about it for publishing here on Nuxified.org. Smiling

I eventually restarted a computer and everything is working properly now. I guess Qemu sometimes tends to mess things up between its emulation and actual hardware or something..

It's still pretty slow and I'd welcome any tips at increasing the Qemu performance, but Haiku is pretty impressive.

I am gonna make and upload some nice screenshots. Smiling

You know, "closed source" means little as much as "open source" means little. I don't deal with those terms. But if it is not Free Software then I'll uninstall it. I do wonder however why would it be proprietary software. What the heck is the point of that!?

Closed source makes clear what it is, there also is proprietary "open" source (aka shared source and such).

It's not any clearer to me than saying proprietary vs. Free Software. It is either one or the other. Some of the Shared Source licenses by Microsoft are plain and simply proprietary as they break at least one of the four freedoms, which is to me pretty much the only measure.. but if we should continue the discussion maybe we should do so elsewhere (in the lounge or Libervis.com Eye-wink )

A_thing, I've just visited that wikipedia page. I've also noticed a link to a free alternative called qvm86, but there are no releases yet.

I had a look at haiku. Quite impressive, especially for a 81M image. It lacks useful apps though... (webbrowser!!!). I feel more at home in Syllable, even though it seems slightly more buggy. Haiku is single user, without even a login screen. I don't like that.

Interesting times are coming, with lots of alternative free OSes becoming useable.

Yes, not all of it is Free Software though but there are Free Software as well so it's already a nice resource. Things like that show how much of a legacy BeOS world still has behind it and which is waiting on Haiku OS to push it forward even faster than some other from-scratch OS's that don't have so much history behind it.

There is also a proprietary version (or clone) of BeOS called Zeta, but well.. it is proprietary.

I think both Zeta and Haiku are important for saving BeOS: Zeta to make sure there is a useable version today, and Haiku for the future. I dare to bet once Haiku gets stable enough, Zeta will become based on Haiku instead of the old BeOS.

I suppose the same way as in BeOS, but that's not an answer. Eye-wink I wonder if installing software is even supported yet in Haiku. I've searched a bit through Haiku forums, but I couldn't find anything.

Looking over available apps in Haiku OS image that I run in Qemu I have found an "Installer", but it appears to be only for installing Haiku onto a drive. Not sure if it can be used to install other software somehow..

Packages probably have some binaries that can manually be put in a bin folder...

I've patched the qemu 0.8.1 and the CVS version of qvm86 a bit and it's now working. Guess I could share it Smiling

However I'm still experiencing the same problem. The mouse and keyboard are not responding. And restarting doesn't actually solve the problem.

It should actually be pretty easy if you are using a distro with a package manager of some kind as it should be available for install from your distros repositories.

For example, I am using Arch and all I had to do was install it with a pacman package manager. I am sure debian, gentoo and RPM based distros would have one as well.

Once it's installed it's just a matter of launching it on command line with proper attributes or options.
