I am unsure if i am doing it correctly. I am fine at copying and pasting in the terminal, but i am unfamiliar with the interface. Is there somewhere that I can learn to read those linux commands/procedures? I am still getting a feel for it all.
You could learn to use the commandline the way I did it, by typing man command every time you encounter a new command somewhere. Pay attention to the "see also" section of man pages, you might want to read the manpages referred to there. Unless you're using archlinux, there's also info, which usually has even more information.
But "my way" made more sense in the time when using the net was still slow and expensive. I had a quick look at this online book, and I think it's safe to recommend it.
However, when i try to run it from the red gem icon andrightclick to switch to beryl my laptop freezes. How should i resolve this? My specs are on my signature.
and i was able to access beryl, before that the computer kept freezing when i clicked on emerald manager icon.
when i hold down ctrl alt and press left and right a mini windows appears in center, and i can switch desktops, for some reason i feel this is ubuntus not beryls?
But i havent been able to turn on effects yet.
I think i have to bind commands, mainly because they all say "disabled" for the cube and such.
I'm pretty sure it's that the savage driver doesn't support the things needed for fancy effects. I don't think there's a nonfree driver that does either. (All the reverse-engineering efforts are on ATi and NVIDIA's cards because they're the most popular.)
Those are two topics in one.
You could ask one of these questions in another thread... EDIT: Fixed. Thank you.
Hmm, here is how to install Beryl on Ubuntu Dapper with AIGLX.

Have you got 3d acceleration working? What is your output from glxgears
[in terminal]
it sent back
"libGL warning: 3d driver claims to not support visual 0x42"
BTW: direct rendedring = yes
which 3D driver are you using ?
im not sure.
What chipset is your graphics card? Is it nvidia, ati, via etc?
Open /etc/X11/xorg.conf and look for "Driver".
S3 Savage IX8 with 8MB
S3 Inc. 86C270-294 Savage/IX-MV
But what driver are you using?
Section "Device"
Identifier "S3 Inc. 86C270-294 Savage/IX-MV"
Driver "savage"
no hardware issues. But can you guide me on the bindings and how to put the cube on?
What exactly did you get working? GLXGears? Beryl with no effects but a working window manager?
i ran
sudo beryl-settings
and i was able to access beryl, before that the computer kept freezing when i clicked on emerald manager icon.

you still think its a hardware issue?
