Installing a new OS on Sony Ericsson K310i

I can hook my mobile phone, which is Sony Ericsson K310i, to the computer via an USB cable and then move files from and to it. Now I'm wondering if it could be possible to install an alternative free GNU/Linux based OS on it this way. Normally it doesn't show anything in the system folder and seems to hide some things in other places as well, but maybe there is a way to reveal this?

Has anyone tried something like this? How safe is it? Can all phone functions work properly and which OS can be used? Also, is there a way to return the original software as it was in case the experiment would fail?

Thanks
