kblockd

kblockd

Hello Nuxifiers ! I have a quick question for you...
Can someone please tell what kind of deamon is the kblockd ?
Probably it has something to do with kernel.
Lately I don't have much (free) time to google it, so does anyone knows what that kblockd is ?

Thanks !

Yes, it does seem to have

Yes, it does seem to have something to do with the kernel and probably means "keyboard locking daemon", but I'm not sure exactly what is its purpose.

If it's a keyboard locking

If it's a keyboard locking daemon, it doesn't need to be (very) related to the kernel, and if it is doing something for the kernel, it's probably not something with the keyboard. Either it is KeyBoard LOCK Daemon, or it is Kernel BLOCK Daemon.

Whatever it is, there doesn't seem to be any such thing on my system, so you probably don't need it!

kblockd

kblockd is a kernel thread, essentially, it periodically activetes the block device drivers.

(I'm not 100% sure what that means - but that's roughly the desctiption given in "Understanding the Linux Kernel" by O'Reilly)

After a long... long search, this is what I found !

The kblockd message is just a symptom of the machine running low on memory
and starting to fail normal kernel memory allocations.
There's always a potential for hangs when something can't allocate memory.
Usually it's in the middle of a transaction and just forgets about it.
What should happen is that the transaction should be rolled back and retried.
