I updated my kernel recently, so I rebooted. To my surprise, KDE would not start up when I booted back up. KSplash went fine, but that is it. Output of stderr from startx:

The application 'pidgin' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
the application.

I have tried reinstall dbus* and kdebase, kdebase-workspace, and kdebase-runtime.

Dbus sometimes causes weird

Dbus sometimes causes weird issues.. This might be obvious, but just in case.. maybe you need to restart dbus or make sure it's automatically starting with KDE? On Debian this is usually done by /etc/init.d/dbus start..

Otherwise I'm really not sure.. I have especially little experience with KDE4.. What about a kernel upgrade could make KDE4 fail?

no dbus service

:/ Fedora does not have a dbus service. I will look into what the Debian script does.

hacked around

Logging in as other users worked, so the problem was somewhere in ~/.kde. I deleted ~/.kde and am reconfiguring it now.

Ah that does happen

Ah that does happen sometimes.. It happened a couple or so time to me with GNOME except I could start it, but it didn't work right. I'm not sure what exactly messes up in the configuration when that happens though..

It was the GTK-Qt engine.

This happened again. This time around though, I did not just delete all of ~/.kde/. What worked was deleting ~/.kde/env/ which only contained some script used by the GTK-Qt engine.

D-Bus is called messagebus in Fedora. ;-)
