Major clean-up in Switch to Linux section

Hello everyone,

I am going through the "Switch to Linux" section on GGL to give it a refresh.
So far the following are done:

  • "Switch to Linux" page entirely changed
This page wasn't actually "doing" anything - merely redirecting to the various parts of the section. So I removed absolutely every word I could, added colors and buttons. It should be much clearer now.
The "hover" effect does not work with IE, it will probably soon, thanks to a JavaScript trick. It's a minor "plus" so not urgent.
  • "Where to go now" page seriously cleaned-up
I changed the organization of the page and tried to make it more visual. There is a graphic for each link, making them more inviting.

Next, I will go through the "choose a distro" and "try or install" pages, but the changes there will be minor. The last big change in his section will be the "from windows to linux" page, which I would like to improve significantly (making it look less like a paper or an article).
The attitude I try to have is to be more relevant: I go meticulously through the pages with a blah-blah-o-meter and remove anything that triggers it (it's hard!).

As usual, thoughts and criticisms are welcome.

Olivier.

keep going...

The clean-up continues,

The Choose a distribution page is cleaned up. I put a more visible link to the "try or install" page at the bottom.

The Try or Install page gets a major lift-up. I removed lots of useless text, changed the position of the external links, changed the pictures.
This page might host commercial links later on, towards a distributor of distribution CDs.

As usual comments are criticisms are welcome.

more improvement

Thanks to a_thing's idea and work, I re-worked the code of the "Switch to Linux" page. It still looks exactly the same but:
- no more unordered list behind the surface. CSS-less browsing and generally semantics are worse, but
- the whole "block" for each sub-section now acts as a link. So it's no longer necessary to hover the *text* to actually get the link. Accessibility is vastly improved.

This sounds complicated and it's difficult to explain, but pay a visit to see. If you don't notice anything particular and the links feel right, then great! Another advantage is that the "hover" effect now works with IE6.
I'm quite happy with the result and will try to apply this to the 3 main links of the homepage when I get time. The general thought is to "make clicking easier" - I learned something here.
