No sound on headphones output
My sister installed Ubuntu on her new laptop and we have run into the following problem.
When we play music the sound comes out right from the speakers, however when we plug in headphones (small stereo jack), there is no sound at all (neither in headphones nor in speakers)!
I am not certain this is a software problem. We have not tried the headphones when the laptop was under Windows (delivered with XP) and we have no way to install Windows back (erased the "backup" partition, there is no cd) just to check.
I have tried everything I could on Ubuntu 6.10 to get sound on headphones but to no avail. In the sound preferences, using ESS, ESD, ALSA or the analog device for sound all work on the speakers but not on the headphones. I also tried every combination of tick/untick in the sound mixer (Alsa mixer).
I finally tried fiddling with the "Function" keys on the keyboard, again without success.
So my question is: Am I missing something important? Do you believe the problem is hardware-related?
The laptop specs are:
Packard Bell MZ35-U-005 , CPU Pentium Dual Core 1.6GHz, RAM 1024MB, HD 80GB, Screen TFT15.4, DVDRW. I had lots of trouble making wifi work but it is now stable.
Thanks in advance for any tip!
