Package management on slackware

When I used slack daily, I used slapt-get, though mostly I installed by source.
Slapt-get was pretty good, but not as good as apt-get but it does the job. The main problem with it is the small reposotory of packages, it onyl had a few hundred iirc, thus it reduced how usful it could be.

Hm, now that you mentioned that you usually compiled from source on Slackware it crossed my mind that slackware actually may be the perfect distro to use as a base for everything else being source based.. It is clean and simple so it's suitable for compiling and package manager wont get in the way if you use checkinstall instead of the make install command.. a nice coexistence. Slackware can basically be a hybrid between source based style and binary style.

If I ever come back to Slackware I'll have to try smart though. It seems to have support for slackware.

Strange, I heard on the slackware channel that the .tgz packages are only .tar.gz, but with install scripts to make it install easier, doesn't sound right though... :roll:

There is also a ports for slackware, and swaret, which are both pretty good when I was slacking.

i compiled from sourcce all the time for my short period on slackware

Another package manager I used on Slackware was force-get (the Jedi/GNU Project's package manager). It was usful to update basic things like gcc, since the reposotries for things like slapt-get were out of date.

Oh, the LakerDonalds package manager.. I remember trying it once on slackware and it worked actually..

If I get to slackware again I might give it another try and maybe even use it for installing and updating some stuff. He really does some great work with the whole Jedi GNU/Linux and force-get thing.

This looks interesting: portpkg. It provides a ports (like BSD) collection and a ports package manager for slackware.

I'm also wondering about how would smart work on slackware for binary packs.. If it would support dependancy checking on slackware that would be a great thing..

Maybe I should install slackware one of these days to try this out.

I left because of the lack of packages. It was horrible to compile on it also. It hardly ever compiled correctly.

I feel bad talking about my first distro this way, and I did love it with a passion but I just didn't have the patience to fix it all the time.

I used Slackware as my second distro, after Mandrake 10. It was a nice ride, but I also didn't like that it didn't have a good package management with dependency resolution, which drove me to Arch later. But it's still a nice clean, stable and fast distro.
