problem stuck in terminal screen during booting

I got this message when i startup my ubuntu. How do I get to my desktop? need help asap!
i get a black screen and i can add my login id and password. but i dont know the phrase to get out of it and i am checking google and ubuntu support for help.
try
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart(this will almost only work as such on Ubuntu and certain configurations of debian and gentoo)
went into ctrl alt f1 and did it. now i logged in, i have a blank screen with a white box in the upper left corner. i dont have my desktop viewable, but using sudo ls my files are still intact
it says there was an error starting gnome settings daemon
