Proposed changes for GetGNULinux.org for Dec.1st

Hello,

as you know we are working on running the Pootle translation interface to manage the GetGNULinux.org site, our deadline is December 1st.

I thought it would be a good opportunity to simplify/re-organise the site a little. The idea would be to re-name the "About" page into a "More" page.

Specifically (have a look at the site map to check):
- The "Where to go" page in the Switch to Linux section is deleted;
- The "About" page becomes "More" and inherits the content of the "where to go" page. So, mostly, a handful of well-chosen links.

The description of GLM in the About page would be simplified a lot and moved to the bottom. It would be less needed since we plan to include a link to GLM in the footer of the website.

- All the under-sections of the About page disappear:
*Legal information: to be replaced by a page on gnulinuxmatters.org which would be used for all our sites;
*Website FAQ: purely deleted and perhaps replaced by an FAQ on gnulinuxmatters.org later on (optional)
*Contact: replaced by a contact page on gnulinuxmatters.org (needed since we're swamped with spam anyway)
*Credits: same thing
*Site map: deleted (much less needed).

Generally this would make the site simpler and lighter. It's also much easier to integrate into Pootle and translate.
The rest of the site would remain strictly identical (of course it can always be improved but it's time expensive and we are working hard on more important things).

Does this sound sensible?
(regulars will recognize ideas they have proposed months ago here ;-) diffusing slowly).

Thanks
Olivier.

I'm sorry for being late on

I'm sorry for being late on this...

I like all of your suggestions, but please give me one/two days to finish the implementation of gettext on GGL.o. Once gettext has been implemented, I'll write in the tracker how to edit our webpages from now on (now we have to insert PHP code and I'll show you how to insert PHP code the safe way).

Cheers!

Some progress

There is some progress already and the changes should be complete soon.
Already complete:

I am about to start changing the "About" page contents directly now.

I just read your FAQ and

I just read your FAQ and found a funny error:

Quote:

Why don’t you get yourself a dictionary / grammar book?

English is not our mother language, and errors might subsist. If you spot some typo or awckwardness, please give us notice.

I think it's spelled "awkwardness". ^^

I don't have a lot of time right now (altough I still have a tendency to waste it) and you already have translators for French and German, but eventually, I might be able to help in French/German translations too. Eye

Ok, I started translating

Ok, I started translating linuxpreloaded into German:

Quote:

Keine restriktive software zu entfernen;

[main vendor list]

Bitte sehen Sie auch die folgenden Verkäufer:

[other vendors]

Anmerkung: Manche dieser Links sind kommerziel (Wie ist das möglich?).
Feedback über Verkäufer? Wollen Sie auch in dieser Liste stehen? Bitte kontaktieren Sie uns.

Only thing that remains to translate are the vendor informations. I suppose that only those shipping to Germany are to be considered.
Is this done by the vendors themselves?

Thanks for the work.
The vendor list in each translation is selected manually by someone (you could suggest a list if you want....)
If you really want to get involved in translating GLM projects, have a look at our translation system

German is a foreign language to you, right ? If it is, good job. I have just corrected your translation somewhat and will explain the changes below.

my translation:

Quote:

now...

Keine restriktive software zu entfernen;
GNU/Linux preinstalliert und prekonfiguriert.
In theory, this is okay. However, "restriktiv" doesn't sound right in this context. The words preinstalliert and prekonfiguriert are at best not very idiomatic, vor~ is better here.

Kriegen Sie Linux, ohne eine Windows Lizenz erwerben zu müssen!
Kriegen is a colloquialism. "Windows Lizenz" has to be "Windowslizenz" (or maybe Windows-Lizenz) (compound words...)

Falls GNU/Linux installieren nichts für Sie ist, kaufen Sie doch einen Computer mit preinstallierter freier Software.
Missing a zu there. preinstalliert: see above. Your translation (with an imperative) is too free/not in the spirit of the original, IMHO

Wir haben die folgenden Verkäufer für Sie ausgewählt für ihre Simplizität und ihren Service.
Word order is wrong (sentence construction like this is not unheard in spoken German, but it isn't correct and sounds wrong to me in almost any case). "Simplizität" sounds a tad too latin/foreign/scientific to me (not idiomatic here, one could say). Service is an anglicism I chose to avoid but which is perfectly fine.

Falls Sie sich für einen Kauf bei einem der folgenden Verkäufer entscheiden, werden einige von ihnen uns einen Teil ihres Bestellungsbetrags geben - so können Sie gleichzeitig einen tollen Computer kriegen und unsere gemeinnützige Arbeit unterstützen.
Bestellungsbetrags is not at all idiomatic if the word even exists (probably does, but ->Bestellbetrag). Otherwise just cosmetic changes.

[main vendor list]

Bitte sehen Sie auch die folgenden Verkäufer:
"see also" doesn't exist as such in German

[other vendors]

"Organisation" isn't wrong per se, but "Verein" is a near exact translation of the type of organisation we are in France, and emphasizing that adds some legitimation — the right to found associations is part of the constitution, after all ;-)

OK, the changes I wanted to

OK, the changes I wanted to bring are nearly all ready.

  • The "About" page is renamed "More" and is much, much clearer. The "where to go" page is gone
  • The "switch to linux" page is completely refreshed and looks quite neat now
  • The "try or install" page is updated, its style refreshed and it features a bigger link to linuxprelaoded.com

The last update I want to do is a big freshening up of the screenshots. I'll bring this up in a new thread.

None of these changes appear on the current site. They will when the site will be built by Polyglota/Pootle.
The switch to gettext is progressing. I'd say roughly 50% of GGL is ported now. I hope that we should be rolling (enabling Pootle translations fully) within 1 week. Late, but the end is in sight now.

The status of the work in progress is visible in the ggl SVN repository: http://tracker.gnulinuxmatters.org/ggl/browser/original/trunk/pages . Anyone can work on the files not yet ported to gettext and help us get there.

Indeed, thanks for the hint

When I first published that FAQ entry I had spelled "dictionary" wrong. :-)

It's corrected now.

Great!!

Thanks so much KIAaze and free-zombie! This is extremely helpful.

I have set-up a German version of the website in the linuxpreloaded repository. You can view the files by browsing on the tracker, or with an SVN application by making a checkout of the repository svn.gnulinuxmatters.org/linuxpreloaded/linuxvorinstalliert.com

You should both have permissions to write (commit) to that repository.

It would be wonderful if you could translate the descriptions of the vendors as well. We will remove the ones which are not relevant to German visitors and perhaps re-order them slightly.
We have registered the domain linuxvorinstalliert.com already and will try to get an even better one. As you complete the translation I would then translate the header graphic (I need about 1-2hrs for that) and we could be off in a matter of hours with something that can hopefully help our German readers.

I hope you can complete this excellent work... again it is so helpful!
Thanks very much

Olivier.

Hi again! First of all to

Hi again! Smiling

First of all to answer free-zombie's question:

Quote:

No, not really... My mother is German and I went to Germany quite a few times.
But I went to a french school and am now even studying in France, so I guess that's why my German isn't perfect. ^^'

I started translating using the pootle service and it works really well. However there currently seem to be only 2 sites there:
Get GNU/Linux and Get GNU/Linux - Trimmed edition (What's that by the way?)

But the main problem is that the getgnulinux site is already translated into German at linuxfueralle.de, while the .po files aren't. So maybe it's time to update them. Eye

I also tried the svn and checked out without any problems.
However, I can't commit since I don't have an account. Or did you create one for me I don't know of?
Where do I register?

Oh and this page doesn't seem to exist yet:

That's right, we are concentrating on GetGNULinux.org; the other websites will only be added later.

We created a "trimmed" edition because we want to enable translators to release quickly. The trimmed edition contains only the very basic pages and halves the required amount of work.

Absolutely. I am busy doing this with the French version currently, and this allows me to detect and fix bugs on Poliglota and GetGNULinux.org at the same time.
Anyone can work on transferring the contents of LinuxFuerAlle.de into the German translation in Pootle. It's quite time-consuming; there has been many improvements in the text of GGL since the German translation was created.

In the end the current code for the LinuxFuerAlle.de website will be dropped completely and everything will be released from within Poliglota.

You mean the repository for LinuxPreloaded? I am PM'ing you with credentials.

We have frozen the repository for LinuxFuerAlle.de however, to focus on Pootle & Poliglota. Hopefully we can make a big release at the end of February.

It's corrected, sorry, we re-named it but the redirection didn't follow.

Thanks!

Anyways, translators no longer need svn access. All they need is Pootle and Poliglota.

Cheers!

Thank you all

I would like too take some time too thank the posters for doing what you do and make this community great im a long time reader and first time poster so i just wanted to say thanks.
