Ryzom campaign; a "new" Free MMORPG on the horizon?

LWN has a story about the Ryzom Campaign which aims to buy copyrights to an online game from a company which has just gone bankrupt after having most of the game proprietary.

If the campaign succeeds we might have a new completely Free Software MMORPG on the GNU/Linux gaming scene which would be great, since there is a lack of such games on GNU/Linux.

One commentator on LWN also actually thought Mark Shuttleworth could be a good candidate to buy the game and release as Free Software or maybe he could at least make a big donation and become an affiliate of the Ryzon Campaign. Would be a good hit towards improving the reputation of GNU/Linux as a gaming platform.

Interesting developments on

Interesting developments on this. FSF pledges $60,000 to the Free Ryzom Campaign.

With this kind of donation chances have just grown so much that we will have a fully Free MMORPG not so far from now. Smiling

Awesome news IMO.

Not sure if anyone here

Not sure if anyone here heard, but the project failed and is now reorganizing into a more general campaign. Here is a newsforge story.

Still considering the interest it looks like there is a fair chance for the Free Software community to get its first real MMORPG. It will either be developed out of some existing codebase or bought from someone else.
