Scheduling the first practice matches

Acting on Jose's idea I would like to call for scheduling the first practice matches. They will be in games that currently have the most mind share among the registered players (basically Nexuiz, OpenArena and Tremulous) and currently with no predefined teams. Instead we would just all join the game and play until we see basically who's who and who could be best matched with whom to create balanced teams. So we could first have a few free for all matches and then try experimenting with teams.

I would send out an email invitation for this to all people who are currently signed up. With your input we can set the best and earliest date possible for the first of these practice matches.

So, are you ready to battle? Smiling

Cheers

Monday + Wednesday-Friday

Monday + Wednesday-Friday -> from 18:00 to 22:00 UTC
Tuesday -> from 20:00 to 22:00 UTC
Saturday-Sunday -> whole day theoretically but morning/afternoon (UTC) might be better for me

In all cases, I'll need to be informed a few days earlier since I currently don't have internet at home.

Practice matches: Friday evening/night GMT

Let's have some practice matches before the real ones, for each tournament we have a working server for by then.

Friday, November 23, whole evening and night per GMT (UTC) time we can play Tremulous, OpenArena, Nexuiz and Armagetron Advanced all in one, one after another, as many as we can line up. The results wont be counted, but it will be a nice chance to see who's who and to test the waters.

Everyone will be required to record demos and post them here using the "file attachments" function. This is because I wont be able to be in all matches at the same time, so I can view the demos to see how everyone is playing. Smiling

I will try to clear up the associated servers by then. For some games they already are. I'll post them in time here. In the mean time you can see the server infos here.

This will be quite loose, but I'm hoping everyone who signed up and confirmed will play at least one match in a game they confirmed for against any other confirmed random opponent. Before the match you can come to irc.freenode.net in the #gamefest channel to meet your opponents. Consider it a waiting room before the match. Smiling

For example, if it's OpenArena or Nexuiz 1on1 you just need to find one confirmed opponent to play against. If it's CTF 3vs3 you need to find 2 more people to play with you and 3 opponents among those confirmed for the CTF tournament. If it's Tremulous just get one of the clans or form a random team of 5 against another random team of 5 people to play against. If it's Armagetron Advanced, get 3 more people to play with you.

If you're in, just post here and ask for people to join you.

If a server is empty and you can find opponents that soon, you can start practising right now. Again, servers are noted here: http://www.freedomware-gamefest.com/tournaments

Thank you

As long as you played. The

As long as you played. The format can be .dem. If it is something else than .dem and upload doesn't work you can rename to .dem.

You can, if it's convenient (if there are more of them) just tar/zip them and upload the archive.

So is anyone gonna show up

So is anyone gonna show up tonight?

You can go to the #gamefest channel on IRC on either irc.freenode.net or irc.quakenet.org where game specific channels are #gamefest.nexuiz, #gamefest.openarena, #gamefest.tremulous etc.

US Tremulous server is ready. EU OpenArena servers are ready. All Nexuiz ladder servers are available too. DarkSyndicate for Armagetron should be available as well. For the rest, they should be ready soon. They're mostly up, just not configured by gamefest rules yet.

What time do you plan to

What time do you plan to start this? I think I could still stay up for a while, like an hour or so.

Anytime anyone is ready

Anytime anyone is ready really. It's almost 5 PM here, so basically friday evening soon. Smiling

All that's needed is two opponents and we can already have some 1on1 matches where those are applicable (Nexuiz, OpenArena). 4 people can have an Armagetron match. 6 people can have a CTF match and 10 people can have two teams in Tremulous.

Everyone please upload

Everyone please upload demos here instead: http://www.freedomware-gamefest.com/upload

Just select game you played from the "demo" drop down and upload with the "file attachment" function below.

I'll put up a page from which all demos per each category will be accessible.

Thank you!

I reached that link after logging in and then following the link on the left margin (near the bottom) that said "Create content". Then I clicked on "Story" which is the same hyperlink as this one.

I am making an invitation

I am making an invitation to low-skilled players that want to practice with someone trying to improve a bit and that should serve as a good match (Nexuiz in particular).

Also, I am inviting any highly-skilled player that wants to create a massacre demo. I don't know if it can get much better than this http://www.freedomware-gamefest.com/node/47 . Maybe. But why take a chance? Better to practice now with a real green than to forgo and risk getting left out of the "Top Worst Beatings Ever Caught on Tape".

Finally, for those in the middle, don't feel left out. Here is your opportunity to feel like that highly-skilled player that trounced your a....

You'll have to beat me

You'll have to beat me first for that place at the end of list. ;-) In my 2nd match with GreenMarine I managed three suicides, and I only remember one!

Just wait for the replay. ;-)

You'll have to learn to read the tape a little better.

5 suicides (yes that was a "-" in front of that 5) and I though three of those were me fragging him. I would have reported the official score within the subject line but the webmasters haven't figured out how to properly code in that possibility.

I have some advice for your other/remaining matches with green. Offer green food. I stubbornly refused to exploit that weakness. The second match did not get easier (I think green was even hungrier). It didn't help that my lag was horrendous the second time around. Then again, you saw the first match, the one with the good lag. Then again, even when green was standing still with arms down and asked me to take a few free shots (way after 150 miliseconds had passed) I failed!

You seem worthy to join the Club http://www.nuxified.org/topic/calling_for_brief_articles_on_why_do_you_love_that_game#comment-11311 . I'll be posting a little later more on how we can get even.

PS: You can be Supreme Nexuiz Nerd if you want, so don't feel pressured to make a bigger spectacle than I did to prove it -- Oh, oh -- I said "don't feel pressured" !!! Sorry about that !!!!

I'll be willing to play

I'll be willing to play some practice matches when I have some time, and also show some tricks I already managed to learn by watching the demos of pros in action of "inhuman" massacre of noobs. Sticking out tongue

Perhaps, after we're done with practising and training we wont be such big noobs anymore. And when 2008 fest comes, they better watch out. Eye

For the time being,

For the time being, whenever I get the motivation, I'll be practicing with robots in campaign mode; however, I'd like to help other humans out (the robots seem to get dumber the more I play against them) by offering the occasional creative variation robots can't offer. Maybe before this tournament is over, someone can benefit from practice rounds against other humans that are a part of the tournament/forums (??).

>> I already managed to learn by watching the demos of pros in action of "inhuman" massacre of noobs

I guess some things you can imagine, but it's good to see a good player in action (and to see just how far badly you measure up). It's also a quicker way to learn about some parts of the game (weapons, maps, angles, abilities). One advanced technique seems to be to fire into the ground to "reach new heights". That seems like an advanced strategy since it sacrifices health immediately in order to potentially acquire better position.

It was also nice to see the pros constantly grabbing items. I thought maybe that was a cheap thing that only weak players did. No. It's a thing that weak players do weakly.

I would like to see a pro break the cycle where you are fragged and the opponent continues loaded with armor, health, and weapons, making it more likely they will frag you yet again. I'd think you'd have to know the map really well since you'd have to be efficient in all your moves while in the extra vulnerable recently-got-fragged state. This is probably one of the things that makes 1 on 1 so difficult and painful. CTF, team matches in general, and even LMS tend to allow more time to recover (while your assailent is distracted or also gets fragged) or to run into an opponent also in a weakened state.

I think it will be difficult for whoever wins the tournament(s) to repeat.. and speaking of other tournaments. I hope someone is willing to work on this for next Spring instead of waiting a full year or longer. Maybe we can wrap this tournament up by starting a mailing list for people to keep in touch and maybe plan the next one little by little ahead of time at least until someone gets inspired and decides to run with things. Also, with an ongoing gamefest project, we can have a definite place to accept contributions useful to future gamefests. Even this gamefest will not be over when it is over.
