Should we allow userbars in signatures?

I was going through another forum and again noticed those userbars in people's signatures. While it's not the first time I noticed them I was thinking.. maybe we could make an exception to the rules for these userbars, just to allow forums to look a bit more vibrant and allow members to kind of express themselves this way. They are fairly small and non-intrusive.

The rule would then forbid all images in signatures except those of the standard userbar size or less (in both width and height). And the standard size is 350x20 px. It would also continue to forbid animated images of all sorts.

What do you think?

Interesting phenomenon, I

Interesting phenomenon, I wasn't even aware of it (guess how much time I spend on OTHER forums Sticking out tongue ). It would look quite colorful, which is good, so why not?

Now I'm thinking about interesting combinations of userpics and userbars...

I do think putting advertising in userbars should be strictly forbidden.

Yep, people can pair up

Yep, people can pair up their avatars and userbars in interesting ways, another thing that adds up to this idea.. Smiling

Agreed, although we may have to draw a line between linking to one's homepage with it and spammy kind of advertising... or.. on the other hand, we could forbid all kinds of advertising and let people link to their own homepages via a text link, as it's currently allowed anyway.

I suppose an exception to

I suppose an exception to the "no images" rule that allows (for example) "at most two advertising-free non-moving images with a size less than or equal to 400x30 pixels" which may be banned by the team/ the moderators if they are thought inappropriate, is in order

or something like that anyway. I quite like small sig images in general (not only userbars like that) ;-)

Well initially I thought it

Well initially I thought it be only one image and height only 20, but I guess we can be a little more flexible and hope not too many people push it to the limit. Eye

Anyway, I'll wait for a bit more comments before applying the rule.. then I have one nice userbar to add to my sig. Smiling

Btw, I'm thinking of later cleaning up the rules and posting them in a more obvious place.

What would be considered

What would be considered advertising?
I use my signatures mainly for "advertising": gnulinuxmatters.org, freedomware gamefest, getgnulinux.org, ... ^^

Funny quotes or pics and useful links are always great, but what's wrong with this special kind of "advertising"?
Of course, if somebody comes to this forum here, those aren't really necessary, but I have discovered quite a few good sites thanks to people's signatures.

I think it's enough if the signatures respect the usual forum rules: no racism, discrimination, insults, porn, etc
And of course limit the size of signature pics so that they don't take up all the space on a thread...

Moving images don't bother me personally. I like funny .gifs. Smiling
It seems they can be disabled on the ubuntuforums. That's a nice solution for those with low-bandwidth connections.

Note: Most so-called "userbars" are animated.
