Some projects and ideas

Hi all,

I am able to work more and more for GLM and here are a set of ideas gathered for the GLM association.

coming up:

  • The planet site will be moved to a new domain, gnulinuxmatters.org, that will say more about GLM, call for participation, donations and partnerships. This will be done right after we have a bank account.
  • There will be a "Get Linux" plugin for WordPress users. I translated and slightly improved upon Artux's plugin, that detects the OS of the visitor and displays a small message if it's Windows. It works and now only needs a download page on the planet.

This comes on top of the current projects I'm working on, namely transition to XML, clean-up of "Switch to Linux" section, "Why not Mac" topic, GLM accounting, preparation for a conference.

more or less vague ideas (NOT projects)

  • Building a 1-page website on DOC files. Something that would complement RMS's message on the topic, in a more visual way, and with a clear explanation of why OpenXML is not an open format.
  • Finishing the stalled project Linuxcando.com
  • A partnership with Koolu - this looks like a really interesting product. Maybe this would work as a partnership with vendors.
  • A very simple website on restricted free software:
The idea is to build a resource of information on the "gray zone" of free software, explaining clearly what the problems are with MP3, Flash, drivers, Office OpenXML, encrypred DVDs, etc, case per case.
  • A News site for Joe users
The idea is to have a "free software news for my mum" site. 1 or 2 news item per week, no more. At the moment one either learns nothing (traditional media) or too much (LXer for example).
  • Google ads
I'm curious to see if this can be effective/worth the money. I'll probably throw $50 at it to find out.

That's it! enough to keep me busy for the coming decade ;-)
Feel free to discuss & suggest your own
Olivier.

Bad idea. The less forceful you are, the more people will respect your message.

What do you think about switching back to drupal? Drupal scales much more than wordpress and we need something that scales because GLM is always growing. For example, with Drupal is easier (or possible) to have multiple users, easier to build sections, create side bars, amongst other things. I also think Drupal is easier to maintain, despite it's probably harder to setup.

By the way, I'd like to move the Hispanic Planet to es.gnulinuxmatters.org... Do you mind me doing so? I think it would be great to have all of the planets as subdomains of gnulinuxmatters.org.

I like that idea, but I think we should have a section on free formats and free standards, not a page specific to DOC files.

It sounds interesting!

DOC files should be addressed inside such a section, IMO.

I think this website really deserves wordpress (not drupal). What do you think about hosting it in news.getgnulinux.org?

Cheers!

Well done

I agree that those changes are good. Well done! I particularly like the graphics of the CD and the progress bar with the text "free software" on the "Try or install" page, as that emphasises that the free software ideals are the reason for promoting GNU/Linux. However, I think it might be a bit better if that text was changed to "freedom".

One thing I don't agree with is referring to Fedora with the statement "We recommend this distribution if you are committed to using free software". Fedora has a commitment to being 100% "open source" software (at least that's what I heard RMS say fairly recently), and the two definitions are different, with the open source definition being slightly looser, so that doesn't mean it has any commitment to being free software. Also, as far as I know, it contains some software which doesn't satisfy either definition. I've also noticed one small mistake on the "Try or install" page, where it reads "Order a Ubuntu CD" instead of "Order an Ubuntu CD".

I think a new page about Word files would be a good idea, but I think it should address all the Microsoft Office formats. I think that's the main weakness of RMS's article, as people sometimes use the other formats to send information, particularly Excel and Powerpoint (though obviously much less often than Word files). Some of the staff at my university send important information as tables in Excel files, and refuse to send them in any other format. Collaborating with Koolu also sounds like an interesting idea.

If gNewSense will be

If gNewSense will be included among the recommended distros, then the "We recommend this distribution if you are committed to using free software" remark could simply be moved for gNewSense instead of Fedora (which would still remain among recommended distros).

Fully agree about not being

Fully agree about not being forceful. It's the reason why I don't sponsor the Tux500 project.

In this case I don't think it's forceful though. The plugin simply displays a small message in the sidebar of the blog, that doesn't need to be seen by non-Windows users.
It's in use on the planet already (visit it from a Win computer or with IEs4Linux to see the message displayed).

The plugin can be very easily customized to display any message. So it is within the hands of webmasters to make it forceful or not...

Worpdress has the huge advantage that... I know how to use it. ;-) Since time is the thing I need most, and that I wish the GLM site to be simple, I'll stick to WP to start with. The site is almost complete now.

sure, no problem. Sounds sensible.

I agree, but it's not incompatible. I just thought about DOC files because it's an extremely commonplace practice to send them by email, especially in educational areas. A cross-linking between two such sites (one for standards, one for no DOC) would be very relevant.

About the news site, yes, Wordpress would be very suited. I don't know about the domain - maybe we can find a better one? Anyway, as you can guess, that project idea is very low in the priority list ;-)

This is true of Red Hat but I noticed the Fedora homepage defines Fedora as free software (with link to definition). So there is some progress... anyway, gNewSense surely is more free than Fedora is.

Corrected, thanks! Don't hesitate to start a new thread for such separate topics, so that errors like that are noticed earlier.

Yes, there should exist a better name.

Cheers!
