I purchased an external DVD Writer and I thought this information helpful for you specially in write and read a DVD.please read your DVD Writer's manual page befor use.
I've never heard of a DVD writer that couldn't also write CD-ROM and DVD-ROM. Be sure to read the fine print before you buy.
I actually did. Since ROM means Read-Only Memory, no CD-/DVD-writer can record those.
The ones you record are CD-Rs, or DVD-Rs, but not CD-ROMs or DVD-ROMs. Therefor it is only normal that it says it can't write these formats.v

my purpose is give information about DVD writer external because i saw someone that didn't know that their dvd writer what can write or read and have problem when they want write.
I think all the new writers can do everything there is. The last one I bought (internal though) knows all formats (-R/RW,+R/RW,-RAM,Dual-Layer) and even can do LightScribe (which is so cool!).
So, I don't really think there's much to worry about nowadays.
Haha I overlooked that it could read and write CD-Rs and DVD-Rs.
