SSH Access

Probably a dumb question but one I will ask anyway.

How do I access servers running Linux from my Windows box
on my desktop?

I know that I have to go into secure shell from the command
line, but it's been forever since I have worked with Unix/Linux
and I've forgotten how to go about it.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Well I am not sure if Windows has bash (the commonly used shell on GNU/Linux) and an SSH command, but the way we do it with it is this:

ssh

The username is your username on the remote server and hostname is its hostname, obviously. Smiling It should ask for password of your user on remote server upon which you should be in.

Now windows may have some GUI tools to access this, but I wouldn't know and most of us here aren't windows users obviously (since it's a GNU/Linux and Free Software forum).

These kinds of things to me really seem easiest to do from GNU/Linux, maybe you should try it. Eye-wink

Actually, what I am trying to do is access the server (telnet).

The telnet command obviously does not work from the command line, and
I'm just wondering what I need to do in order to access the particular
IP address.

Like I said in my original post, it has been forever (8+ years) since
I have used Unix and like most things if you don't use it you lose it.

The issue is that I don't know much about Windows and what is or isn't available there. As far as I can remember from the last time I used it, Windows XP doesn't even have an unix compatible command line. It has some sort of a DOS command line which is something else and I'm not sure how would you do it from there.

But since it has been so long since you last tried some kind of Unix I must strongly suggest that you do try GNU/Linux because a huge LOT has changed in 8 years. In some manners it is now even easier than Windows and what you want to achieve here can be achieved in a minute very easily. The telnet command is usually installed by default.

If you just remain on Windows I am not sure I can help, not just because we don't support Windows, but because I simply don't know Windows that well.

Another option is to use Cygwin to emulate Linux console environment. This is what I usually use when having to work with Windows. For more SSH information you can read my SSH Tricks article published on PolishLinux.org some time ago.

There is "Services For Unix" that adds a native bash shell and some commands to windows without needing the POSIX emulation that Cygwin provides. Also, there is a port of OpenSSH to windows, so you can have native executables that way. I'm not bashing (pardon the pun) Cygwin, but the native executables tend to be much faster.

If you are running Windows and you need to use telnet to access your server, just type this at the command line:

telnet [ip of server] [port to connect to]

PS: If your server has an open telnet server, you have some issues. Use SSH. Sticking out tongue

if we're interested in over-complicated things:
with cygwin and/or mingw32, you can get a complete UNIX environment for Windows. MS's unix services are probably something similiar.

otherwise:
for ssh, listen to a_thing and you PuTTy.
for telnet, listen to kode or use HyperTerminal (I think that has telnet) AND get rid of telnet as it's not encrypted. Just as unencrypted as HTTP.
