Three UK Modem in Ubuntu Linux
This is my first post, so please bear with me. I think you will be able to work out how good I am at Linux by reading my questions, which are all about Boris's article called "Three UK 3G modem in Ubuntu Linux". I use Linux Mint Daryna and was delighted to read Boris's article but when I got down to studying it, I had the following problems:
1 Boris says "First run wvdialconf utility to detect and configure your modem. I did it as root. If you want to dial-in as user, you need proper permissions for this." How do I go about "running" wvdialconf utility? That is how bad my knowledge is - I don't know how to run a utility! In particular, what are the differences between running it as "user" and as "root"?
2 After setting out what happened when the wvdial utility was run, Boris goes on to say
"As you can see, it wrote the configuration to /etc/wvdial.conf file. We’ll need to fix it only a bit. Here is my conf after the fixes:"
What were the fixes? What exactly was done to what to produce the result set out on the screen after the fixes were done?
3 Next, the article says "Yes, you see it right. The only changes you need to make is the phone number (if not set correctly to this weird value), user name and password (which are simply “threeâ€). That’s all, really. Now try dialling in:"
My problem with this is that I do not know what to do to dial in. Do I type in a command or what? If it is a command, what is it?
There you are - that is how bad I am! However, I would be extremely grateful and even offer some free employment law advice if anyone could answer my queries.
