ubuntu: does it require grub or is lilo allowed?

Someone who shall remain unnamed wants to know if ubuntu dapper can be installed with lilo as bootloader. Apparently grub can only install to the MBR (is this actually true?), and they don't want that.

If it can use lilo, can it be told to use lilo from the graphical installer or should the curses-based installer be used?

Right now they're trying to install dapper on qemu just to find out the answer to their question. It's very slow and did hang twice already... Sometimes it's easier to ask this kind of stuff :roll: .

IIRC you can install LiLo. It is not obvious how to do this though. I used the ncurses based install and it asked me if I wanted to intstall LiLo after I refused to install GrUB (I think I did that by not specifying where I wanted GrUB installed).
When you refuse to install GrUB you'll get a lot of red warning screens, and one of these *should* give you an option to use LiLo instead of GrUB.

Yeah, that was true in the previous version... but is it still true? And I think the guy wants to try the pretty graphical installer.

Well that is what my experiences are with DapperDrake 6.06 (Alpha).
I haven't used the graphical installer on the live CD so I can't comment on that.

grub can be installed to anywhere. Maybe this person should try to refuse MBR installation and see what happens ?

Apparently there's no more lilo, but using the textmode installer grub didn't mess with the MBR. I don't know the details, but problem solved.

(the reason I don't know the details is that I was trying to install SourceMage on my own box at that same moment... I have made a few too many mistakes so I'll go back to the first step. No, I'm not blaming anyone for being grumpy and distracting Laughing out loud )
