OfflineI thought this could be interesting (for this offtopic community forum). Look at the time and effort it took Microsoft to make a new Vista startup sound.
I suppose it's designed to put you to some sort of subtle trance or something. IMO this just shows that Microsoft is more willing to invest time, money and effort into anything that has to do with marketing (read: brainwashing) than into the quality of the actual OS.
I don't know about you, but taking this long just to make a startup sound for an OS is really exaggerating. The slashdot commentator put it nicely:
That's a bit like a car manufacturer worrying about the color of the seats while the breaks are still leaking.

Heh, they spent 18 months trying to get one sound which fits all ears, which is impossible. Thus they have failed. It would have been better to either not have sounds or alow the users to pick them IMHO...

Yeah, put the one that sounds good enough for a default and make it easy for users to pick an alternative. Shouldn't be difficult at all...
Btw, GNOME is usually silent by default but there is a sound preferences panel where this can be easily set up.

That is not the default start up noise, i do not think there actually is one!
Other than that, the new longhorn welcome sounds cheap and crappy. Nice waste of 8 months.

If you listen carefully, you'll notice the guy boots his noisy mac in response to hearing the annoying windows sound. I think commenting on a common annoyance this way is hilarious.

I don't like it. It's long and the pitch is a little high I think. They haven't hit the niftiness of the crappy Mac startup sound (which I actually kind of like, although I prefer no sound at all).
