Well... this is the lounge, so in the interest of sparking some nice socializing (or whatever you want to call it) let's see how many of you are getting caught by the whole football World Cup (Germany 2006) buzz or coming close to it?
Of course, I haven't missed it as it is on TV all the time and there are special long programs dedicated to it, but I don't usually have much interest in watching games where Croatia doesn't play and my interest overall usually increases when Croatian team is coming closer to the good position (or is winning alot of games
).
Tonight they are going to play against Brazil and I'm probably gonna watch just to see how it turns out. I'll watch it with my father so it's a nice thing.
So, what about you? At least sports is something we can see as a positive thing I suppose, to take our minds of the complex world of Free Software, technology and culture for a brief bit of time.
Thanks

I havn't much time for a bunch of guys kicking a ball around a pitch. I watched some of the first game - but found it too boring to watch it all.
Since Wales didn't reach the World Cup, I'm supporting Trinidad and Tobago, for three reasons:
1. They are not England;
2. One of their players plays for Wrexham FC;
3. The Scottish National Party are supporting them.

Yeah it would be kind of boring to watch it all for me as well. I haven't actually watched any World Cup game yet. Tonight would be the first, only cause Croatia plays..
Sounds like a nice choice of team to support.
I heard from AndrewB earlier that there is some sort of friendly rivarly between Scotts and English people.

Yep, as there is between Welsh and English.
The rule of thumb for who a Welsh person or a Scotts person supports goes like: {Wales,Scotland} and anyone who plays against England

Viva Brazileiros !!!
I think Brazil will take the CUP !
It's really fun... watching World Cup.
Too bad that Greece couldn't make it to the finals...
P.S
Maybe we should make a poll for World Cup 2006

You are playing with the most difficult opponent ...
BRAZIL
It would be very hard to win tonight libervisco !

Well, since I'm german I really hope that our team will be better this year than it was during the last world cups. Especially since they are the host team. And as usual, I also support the brazilian team, which definitely plays the most exciting football.

Hehe, well we'll see how they play out tonight. I imagine it's gonna be a tough one for us.
Last time Brazil played with Croatia they were able to come out with a tie, which I think is quite an acomplishment considering who the Brazil is in the world of football.
In any case it should be fun I suppose.
P.S

Hmm, that would be a bit offtopic for a polls section. I admit this to be one of the drawbacks of drupal (you can't just put a poll above a thread in a lounge forum). It may be possible to create an offtopic polls section though and put it there. I'll see what I can do.
Germany used to be a strong team too as far as I remember (well at least in 1998 when Croatia won bronze on World Cup!).

This year Germany has a good team. I thought that KLOSE had stopped football, but he is playing and... keep scoring !!!
Anyway, I bet on him 100 Euros to be the first scorer in World Cup 2006 !

I know it's kind of offtopic, that is why I put a poll in My soul...
And the winner of FIFA World Cup 2006 is...
You may vote there !
Or whatever... I could really use some feedback for the site !

Oh, well that's cool.
I voted "who cares" because really.. it's all just a game.
The site looks like a really nice start, but I think you'll need a new theme and maybe move it to a real host on a real domain name. To be honest it's a bit sluggish now.
Anyway good luck with it!

I dislike football. Why? I don't know. I simply don't get what's so exciting about it.

Maybe some of the more avid fans of football can explain the excitement about the game itself, but I am usually not all that interested in it. I don't really watch World Cup just because of the game, but because my country is involved in one of the most spectacular rundowns in the world. Most of the time I don't even watch games where Croatia isn't playing.
I mean, where else can you see names of Croatia and Brazil being mentioned and talked about in the same context and next to each other and getting as much attention as in World Cup? Maybe it's a little silly, but it kind of makes you proud to see the name of your country so widely propagated and respected.
It may not be so in all countries, but hey, Croatia is still small and to many unknown and we like getting some attention.
I am not a nationalist though and I don't like pushing the whole nationality thing too far. It's just a natural feeling that results from the fact that I am naturally tied to the country I was born and lived in for almost the whole of my life so far. So there.
(And the fact we've been through the war only contributes to this feeling.. time for us to move up from the ashes, if you know what I mean, and we have been moving with style
)
Cheers
Daniel

Have you ever played football ???
Yes. And sometimes I even won. FWIW it's not any more exciting than basketball or volleyball or whatever. Yeah, playing those games is some fun... but what's the point of watching others play them? Especially football is totally unsuitable for watching on tv, the ball is kicked to players out of view all the time so it is impossible to see what is really going on! Furthermore football players get so small on tv, it becomes just like watching the robot football games... can't see the emotion of the game!

The point is that, because I can't be there, through the game I feel that I am there !!! Not to mention all the fun with my friends while watching the game...

I managed to get Internet access for a bit. Anyway,
Not many in America care about football (or soccer in American English).

Yes, in English "America" usually refers to the USA, not North America+South America.

In English, America means both North America+South America and NOT USA...
And believe me, in America (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Paraguay... ) many people care about football (or soccer !)

Ehh...
Noun
America (plural Americas)
1. The United States of America.
2. The continents of North and South America.
And there's no argument on the talk page.

This is exactly what I mean...
I hope that not all the people that live in USA belive that America is only the USA !!!

What I usually see/hear is this:
America = USA
the Americas = everything on the continents of North and South America

I watched a few matches, but what's the point now I don't get French commentary any more
) for no particular reason if they were in
now I'll stick with the Pays-Bas for their Oranje! colour or France for their pronoucation of German player names....
Or Germany for Schweinsteiger. or noone out of lack of interest.
I'm not interested du foot much, but it can be nice to watch some matches. I saw the Croatian first match... they were better than I thought.... and France-Suisse was cool
I'd support Autriche (Austria
Or Serbie-Monténégro for letting chap called MiloseviÄ (spelling?) play

I usually just call USA, the USA, though I sometimes shorten it as "America".
Anyway, I just watched a game between Croatia and Japan and am a bit dissapointed with Croatia. The result is 0:0 while everyone expected for us to win (and we had gazillion of chances to strike, but missed).
But then again it is hot as hell and they were in a *closed* stadium with a glass ceiling. I gotta give them the credit for not dropping dead on that temperature.
I can't sit right in this weather, let alone run and chase the ball.
Cheers and have an icecream or something! (It's 31 degrees here)!
