I have an ATI Radeon X1600PRO and I suppose the only way to use beryl is by installing Xgl because I got to use fglrx driver and AIXGL
doesn't support it. Where do I get Xgl? I can't find a way to download it...

I recently installed Beryl

I recently installed Beryl on my box and in my opinion it does support AIGLX, taken aside that Beryl doesn't run on my box yet because I get an error from OpenGL.

Also from what I read so far I think AIGLX might be preferable over XGL.

Yes, AIGLX is preffered

Yes, AIGLX is preffered over XGL, but I also heard it doesn't work well with proprietary ATI drivers, which whisper uses. Unfortunately X1600 cards don't have free drivers with 3D support yet.

As for where to download XGL it might be available on Debian and derivate distros as xserver-xgl (apt-get install xserver-xgl). That's a hint I got from the XGL troubleshooting page on beryl site.

I understand you may be stuck with this card now, but for next time (and others who may be reading) I would still say X850 is the best you can get with free drivers (BUT with one binary blob, though that's still not as bad as full proprietary drivers).

This wording is dodgy. I'd say that fglrx doesn't support AIGLX.

Which distribution are you using ?

I'm using Kateos Linux. Good Distro Laughing out loud I dont know if it's AIXGL that doesn't support fglrx or vice versa but i know there is no support between them for now and that's annoying Sad
