Hello

I use kaffeine for watching satelite TV and listening to satelite radio and when time shifting it records the program to the .TS format which I'm not very familiar with.

I found that totem can actually play TS files, at least when I rename them to .mp3, but I am wondering if there is a Free Software utility for GNU/Linux (of course) that can convert those .TS files to oggs that can be played with all 'nux players.

Btw, I'm not ripping music illegally since this is being broadcasted on free to air satelite radio directly to my disk and I just want to have it saved for later listening when there are some good muses (like what I'm listening on sunshine live right now) Laughing out loud

Thanks

If totem can play them after you rename them to mp3, maybe they actually are mp3s with a different extension? Can other players like xmms play them?
If not, you have to find out if totem uses xine or gstreamer to play those files, then dig into the manual of either xine or gstreamer to find how to use it from the command line to convert files from one format to another. I bet that is possible, but I don't know the details.

Nope, xmms plays it but it's some kind of noise instead of music. I'll try that with gstreamer or xine that and if succesful let you know how I did it..

Thanks alot

You might see if the file command can determine the type of file. Though if renaming them to mp3 plays them, I think it would likely be some sort of mpeg.

Good point. Then mplayer and vlc should also be able to play them. I know for sure mplayer can rip the sound of a video to a wav, which you then could convert to ogg. I don't remember the details, but I did that once to rip the music of a clip I found on the net. Back then I was planning to buy the cd anyway, but it's sony so...
