Uptime Project!
Fri, 2006-02-03 02:08
Hey all, I dont know if you may have heard of the Uptime Project.
Basically in a nutshell it is a website, that shows users uptimes.
And you can have leagues. So that say the libervis neywork, could put a league together to
1) rival other leagues
and
2) rival each other
Just for fun
It i pretty easy to set up, basically register, then get a client from the download section.
Put it on a cron job, and bam! No need to worry anymore.
Anyway, enough babbling
Basically the libervis network have set up a league.
Libervis Network Uptime Page
If you would like to join, that would be grand!
Just pm me for the password
Thanks

The client isn't free software.
This sounds like a fun idea..

There ought to be alternative free clients. Anyone know of some?
Thanks
Ok doesnt look like it..

sorry folks!
The Uptimes Project seems to be a good alternative. There's no advertisements on their site, the client is GPL'd, and they provide instructions on writing your own client if necessary.
Here's my profile page on their site.
Olive, yes I registered there as well. It looks pretty good. Here's my page.
I think it wouldn't hurt if people from nuxified register there. It doesn't affect your uptime, and you can still put it in your signature like this..
EDIT: OK, so it can't go to signatures because html isn't enabled, but there may be a way to generate an image somewhere and then just link it from here using normal bbcode IMG tag.
I'll try it for you.
But yeah, I've got nothing to show off.
Cheers
Daniel

all the above did not apear cause you have html disabled in the admin panel
Hmm, right.. maybe I should enable that.. I'm trying with bbcode though.

May also be a bad idea thoug, as proved by the recent spam
catch 22 here...

Yeah you're right.. I tried with bbcode, but it seems IMG tags don't support that kind of image link. Ah well, it might be possible some other way.. like maybe to copy the generated image from that link to another location as real jpg or png and then just link to that png..
This looks cool; I'll sign up later tonight. I couldn't tell for sure, but can you show multiple machines under one account/page?
So, can we maybe have some sort of uptime competition? Just for fun of course. If so, is there some way we can track everyone?

I think yes, since there is an "add a host" option which which ought to allow adding unlimited number of hosts. As long as they have one of the uptime updating clients running on it the uptime will be tracked.

I am not sure that this uptime project has that feature, but I think it would be possible to do it pretty easily by using their code for reporting uptime remotely on any page as explained in their FAQ
We would just make a page with names of participants with their uptime code next to it and look who has the longest so far.
Their code is also open so there might be a way to hack some kind of an interface that would do it more elegantly.
Cool! I'd love to see a page with all the Nuxified members and their uptimes. If someone is willing to take this on, I can lend a hand. I can't say for sure I could do it on my own right now, too many other projcts on my plate at the moment.
Sadly, even my servers uptimes are low right now. I just finished updating to a 2.6.15 kernel from backports.org yesterday :-(
this sounds like a nice little project that could be undertaken by members of this forum, that is, to develop some sort of game/compittion that involves uptime as a scoring parameter, it could all be done in PHP for the web frontend (I would be more than willing to write it) but as for a client that reports back to a server, I am not sure. maybe a python script, or something. if anyone has any additional Ideas please reply to this thread with them.
hehe, this seems to be a lost cause. 0hours says on our network.

Well we dropped the uptime-project.net due to the proprietary client, but there's an alternative site with free clients that should work.
We just have to make some kind of a page displaying everyone's uptimes so we can compete.
I don't usually have great uptimes though. Every now and then I find a reason to reboot.
