User ranks

Hello

At the moment there are only two ranks active; moderator and site admin and only those two have rank image.

We should have more normal user ranks, six of them actually (for six tux rank images we have).

So, what do you think, what should they all be called from the lowest to the highest and what post requirements should each have?

Thank you
Daniel

I wouldn't know what to recommend post wise, but I would like to say I don't really like the Tux images used for the ranks. Also the double ranks (moderator in the image and moderator as a text rank name) could be fixed. Smiling

I think there are too many Tuxes here indeed... unless you give users the option to use daemons instead :-)

You know I am happy with no titles. No tuxes, daemons, Ubuntu logos, and so forth for me. Just "Nuxified Team member" or something of the sort will suit me quite fine.

Maybe we should have GNU heads. Laughing

But I think you got a point. While GNU/Linux, being the king and queen of Free Software movement and community and userbase, is prevalent as a supported OS here it isn't the only one.

So, one tux in a header might be enough. Eye

I'll look for other rank images and show them here.. Feel free to make suggestions.

Thanks
Daniel

Well, I don't know if everyone else would like it without any images.. People are used to having some kind of a rank icon and then look forward to earning more (like another tux or another star etc.) It's kind of a subtle incentive. Smiling

An idea to prevent spamming to get post count up: only display post count in the profile, not beside posts and no user ranks.

I agree, no counters and ranks is a good idea.

Another ditto from me. And yes, I was that quest, so 2 votes from me. :smiling:

Alright, no user ranks then. Without them I don't think it's gonna hurt to have post count displayed besides posts (and not removing them means less hacking on phpbb) and could also remain a good indicator of how active a member is, but if you all want it removed and period then I guess that's what I should do. Eye

Note though that without ranks, while possibly avoiding spam we also have less means of rewarding good members. The only remaining way is to give them a title. In my opinion user ranks as well as the post count is a good thing for exactly that reason, but as many good things it is being abused.

In all honesty I would abstain to vote for or against this idea, but it is you who should I listen to, remember. Community powered! Laughing out loud

Cheers
Daniel

I think post based rankings are not the best, since I could post a lot of not very good posts, and get upto a high rank and not be deserving of it. I don't mind having peer appointed ranks, so if someone on the Nixified Team thinks that user X should be given a title for whatever he/she has done to help out in this comunity, I see no reason why this can't be done, it'd be somethnig similar to the 'Trusted Penguin' status on LFdO.

I agree with dylunio, I mean, I post a lot, but not all of what I post is answerin questions, it is also participating in discussions or asking questions, and I dont think it would be good to rank up for doing anything but helping, or maybe we should do something like Karma?

The problem with karma is that it is open to abuse, I remember on another forum someone who was very helpful and well respected in the community had -40 karma, while others who were not so well respected had +10 or so karma. I don't think this forum as it is would be open to such abuse, but as it grows it could become a problem.

Okay, I agree that post count is in no way a definitive measure of members value to the community. I agree with points you guys made.

So, normal members should either be without a specific rank/title (as is now) or given a default title of some kind while valuable members as rated by other members and moderators can be nominated to moderators for inclusion in the "Nuxified Team" only with a bit different permissions from mods and admins (as was actually already suggested).

There is another option though, if you people agree; we can have a different title for moderators without breaking the "team" so to speak while still identifying them as mods in the community (so people know who to address for some moderation related questions).

So the way that could be is this. Moderators and admin can have a title "Nuxified Team Moderators" which implies both that they are in a Nuxified Team, that they moderate it and that they consequently moderate Nuxified.com. High value members appointed to the "Nuxified Team" would then just wear the title "Nuxified Team".

So in short: value members nominated and then voted into the honorary rank/title would be titled "Nuxified Team" and moderators/admins (the rule "enforcers" with higher permissions) would be titled "Nuxified Team Moderators".

How does that sound?

Thanks
