What do you think of phpbb2 plus?

I am still on the look out for the best portal/articles solution for Nuxified.org, but also the best solution for having some cool features here without the major cost of maintanance that comes with having to maintain a big number of phpbb hacks through all the upgrades that will have to be done through time.

I've ultimately found a couple of options for article management. One is bitweaver which has a clean native phpbb integration and a way to migrate standalone phpbb to it. However, with bitweaver all articles would be separate from forums and even comments would not be actual forum posts. This may not seem like a bad thing at first, but after some thinking I've come to think that for a forum centered site like this it would be best for comments to articles to be actual forum posts, so that all discussions are basically forum centered.

That said, perfect thing would be having an "article view mode" for article posts. It would basically transform the look of a thread started by an article into an "article with comments" layout, but it should also have some nice options like print, send to friend or even export to pdf features... I think that would be perfect for us.

Anyway, something I've found is a premodded version of phpbb called phpbb2 plus developed at phpbb2.de (german phpbb community). Here is a demo!

It has alot of hacks already preinstalled which basically transforms the original phpbb to a full featured community forum with a portal. Play a bit with those posts in there.. you'll see some nice feats. Note also those "print this topic" and "email this topic" buttons.

Also look at this. That's exactly what I'm talking about, a full article layout with comments displayed in usual comments layout, something I think people like to see more than a plain forum thread (though a forum thread view is still available).

Anyway, I'll be testing phpbb2 plus on my local server. It is fully possible to convert standalone forums we have here into this so that shouldn't be a problem.

I'd just like to hear your thoughts on this.

Thanks
Daniel

Well, it is similar. It's basically phpbb afterall, but it has some of the MODs we need already preinstalled which may ease MOD maintanance because a good deal of it is already taken care of by them.

It's also an active and up to date project with active support.

So.. anyway, if you agree then I'll be making an upgrade to that today.

Okay, as you can see phpbb2 plus is up and active.

I am going to be converting this theme to our old look (subTango) so you should see the look changing to the one unique to Nuxified.org fairly soon.

Also, some blocks that now appear may not be necessary, as well as even some features. I welcome all your suggestions as to what to leave and what to exclude as well as what to add that's not currently here.

So, any suggestions are very welcome and encouraged. We're gonna make this site absolutely awesome! Eye

Cheers
Daniel

No worries, that and the "distro used" in profile will be brought back. Files hacked to enable this are already up. Just the theme needs to be changed to allow them. Smiling

Alrighty..

This phpbb2 plus comes with many mods which also includes downloads manager, photo gallery, zodiac and horoscope profile infos as stuff that we may not need actually. So, what do you think? Should we remove those?

Feel free to make whatever suggestion you'd like in regard to what features to keep.

Anyway, this current theme is definitely not what we're gonna be having permanently. I still need to convert our old (subTango) theme to phpbb2 plus and the only way to do that appears to be to apply all template specific hacks into it. Well, since I badly need sleep right now, I'll be doing that afterwards. I hope you guys can bare with this for that time. Smiling

Forums are fully functional so it shouldn't be a problem. BUT, don't get used to this design. Eye

So, cya later.

Cheers

We could replace some of nuxified.com with the photo gallery, so keep that.

Remove the zodiac and horoscope stuff though.

Looks nice! I can't wait to see it in SubTango Smiling

I'd get rid of the horoscope and zodiac stuff and any other crufft we don't need.

SubTango plus is a work in progress. But there's just too many modifications to make which is why it's taking so long.

Oh gosh and it's boring too.. but yeah.. Laughing

It's more than half way through. Let's just hope this mess of mods turns out alright after it's done. Smiling

I'm taking a little break now, and then I'm gonna finish up tonight.

Ok guys.. what you see now is 90% our old subTango theme which is now around 99% functional. Smiling

Basically there are some buttons and images left to replace or add and some rough edges to polish, but basic functionality and looks are here.

I'll be working more on it over the weekend until it ends up looking and feeling great.

Those "nuxified tips" "GNUs" (news) and some other portal blocks will be brought back. Also the "distro used" in profile fields and jabber profile will be brought back too.

So, stay tuned. Smiling

Shoutbox is implemented, but I disabled it thinking it isn't really necessary (and it refreshes automatically as well). You want it back?

Oh as for the speed, I'm not sure.. but if it's faster then even better. Smiling

As I said I'll work more on this over the weekend. I gotta some other jobs to do today at home.

Thanks Smiling

Actually I have to admit I cut the job for myself a bit after spendig (or possibly wasting) a few hours manually applying hacks to the theme. Since it's hard to ensure that all hacks I am applying are the same exact version that is used in phpbb plus and it's sometimes even impossible because only latest versions appear to be available, I've just copied a few files from the default theme replacing those in our theme. Those files barely have any styling and design stuff in it and are basically almost the same files as in default free phpbb SubSilver theme, so it hardly consitutes as taking (derivating) from the proprietary FI Subsilver Shadow theme (yes, it's proprietary as it disallows free redistribution of derivates). Those are basically just files with these hacks already applied on them properly.

Anyway.. the remaining images of the default theme are going to be replaced with our own (so it'll look even better).

Also, if you guys want shoutbox that'll be put up too. Smiling

I'm glad you like it so far, but it'll be even better. Eye

EDIT: Heh.. I'd like to clear this stuff about a proprietary default theme. The default theme that comes with phpbb2 plus is FI SubSilver Shadow which also comes with a license that disallows free redistribution of derivates which according to the Free Software Definition makes it proprietary software. This is the reason why I haven't used it as a base for a new SubTango theme (just basically changing the styling) and have instead went for the harder road of converting our own free theme to phpbb2 plus by applying all template specific hacks applied to phpbb2 plus on it. What I finally did was taking mostly generic, but pre-hacked files from that proprietary default theme and replacing ours with that.

The FI license covers their images and design. It can hardly cover generic files from the original subsilver phpbb theme if modifications done to it aren't exclusively theirs. This is why our SubTango theme for phpbb2 plus isn't made a derivate of proprietary FI theme (which would be illegal and bad). If I had continued and hacked those files myself (provided I had access to exact versions of those hacks) I would have gotten the same files I copied.

Hopefully that didn't sound too confusing. I just wanted it out and to be clear. Smiling

My mad php skills? I wish! Laughing out loud

I didn't do these hacks on my own. Phpbb2 plus is a premoded (or prehacked) version of phpbb and those mods are created by many people and then incorporated into phpbb2 plus by a german phpbb2 community.

I have simply attempted to convert an existing subTango theme that I and Pascal Klein (klepas in these forums) created basing it off original phpbb SubSilver theme. To convert I had to apply modifications already devised by others, not modify code myself.

I am slowly familiarizing myself with php through experience and will probably learn it as a whole in time though. Smiling

I know some html and CSS only.

The only things I wish were changed are:

* When you post a message, I'd like to never see a distracting emoticon, especially the animating kind, unless I click "Emoticons" or the happy face toolbar button.

* All these fancy toolbar buttons may not be necessary. Perhaps you could consider what really matters and put <!-- and --> around the rest?

* If it were me, I would simply put text on an ordinary button. I wouldn't put graphical buttons. I just don't think they are all that necessary. The page loads faster and looks fairly okay too. There might be one or two button cases where a graphical button might be useful. But other than that, probably not.

* All these fancy toolbar buttons take time to download.

Perhaps I could make a form page for you that submits to the same reply page, but is like a quick form. You could provide two links -- one takes you to the new form with all the icons. The other form takes you to the quick and easy form.

and blackmail klepas to do the missing icons (like gallery, PageUp/PageDn)

Found Way To Make Custom Nuxified Form

I found a way to make a custom nuxified form that was really minimalist. If you turn on HTML in your profile, and know HTML, you can put that inside your minimalist form and still achieve a formatted effect.

This is untested because I don't want to screw over Nuxified's day (and get permanently banned) while I work out the kinks, but I think it would look something like this:

Required Form Fields (case-sensitive field names):
-subject
-message
-disable_bbcodes (checkbox w/ value "checked")
-disable_smilies (checkbox w/ value "checked")
-attach_sig (checkbox w/ value "checked")

Hidden Form Fields (case-sensitive field names and values):
mode=newtopic
f=<the forum number goes here*>

Buttons:
-The submit button must have a name of "post" and value "Submit". It is case-sensitive.

It should post the data to:
posting.php

Note it requires 3 cookies to have already been set for this to work, and those cookies interface with a backend MySQL database. Those cookies are: phpbb2mysql_data, phpbb2mysql_sid, and phpbb2mysql_t. The job of the cookies are to do a variety of things, but in this case it's to show that indeed you have authenticated and to link the message to the proper username.

To get the forum number, you look at the hyperlink in your status bar on the forums page. The "?f=" is followed by the forum number. The best way to handle this is make a PHP page that first looks at what the forum numbers are and then provide this in a selection box with a name of "f" so that when you post the form, it doesn't need to use the hidden form field called "f".

--------

Libervis -- Do you think you'd like to implement this minimalist, alternate feature? If so, do you have a test site I could test against?

I know someone who wrote a script to spam phpbb ... it required auto-login to be enabled... and you to know the forum ID., that was all...
